Justin Timberlake and Timbaland)<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CvBfHwUxHIk\">&#8220;Umbrella&#8221; video by Rihanna<\/a><\/strong> (feat. Jay-Z)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Singin&#8217; in the Rain&#8221; sung by Gene Kelly<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w40ushYAaYA\">Classic Umbrella &#8220;dancing&#8221; from the 1940s<\/a> <\/strong>(Google Video)<\/li>\n<li>Rihanna Wannabes from You Tube\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HrDvybOpJUg\"><strong>Jessica and Sierra<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=589Mvlz6LWE\">Acoustic<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>New Media Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Assuming the DVD works, we&#8217;ll watch the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are the obvious connections between &#8220;Californication&#8221; and <em>GTA: Vice City<\/em>?\n<ul>\n<li>Why would the Chili Peppers use a video game &#8220;engine&#8221; (the environment the characters move around in) for their music video? What cultural interface are they tapping in to?<\/li>\n<li>What are your experiences with video games and how does that compare or contrast with the sequence you saw?<\/li>\n<li>What are the RHCP &#8220;saying&#8221; in their song?<\/li>\n<li>What does the Red Hot Chili&#8217;s Peppers video &#8220;Californication&#8221; tell us about our public sphere? In other words, what are the Chili Peppers telling us about our &#8220;world&#8221;? Who\/what creates reality for us?\n<ul>\n<li>But isn&#8217;t <em>reality<\/em> reality?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Any takers on &#8220;Ayo Technology&#8221;?<\/li>\n<li>Why the history of Umbrellas and dancing\/singing in the rain? (I honestly have no clue, so, please, let&#8217;s think about this).\n<ul>\n<li>Do you think there might be differences in how men or women view either video?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What do the You Tube &#8220;tributes&#8221; say about New Media?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Emulating Celebrities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s&nbsp;look at some other new media examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What did you notice about Rihanna&#8217;s tributes (or other tributes to videos\/celebrities) on YouTube and amateur videos?<\/li>\n<li>Why would someone make a video of themselves and put it on YouTube?<\/li>\n<li>What does it say about our culture that there are many &#8220;tributes&#8221; like the one we saw in class online?<\/li>\n<li>How does the editing of the video &#8220;Umbrella&#8221; affect our perception of the narrative?<\/li>\n<li>What do the You Tube &#8220;tributes&#8221; say about New Media?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We may not get to everything on this page today, but we will come back to it at some point this semester.
