The main regulated air pollutants still impacting the USA (and much of the world) are microscopic particles called PM2.5 and ozone gas. Exposure to both of these air pollutants as well as many others has substantially decreased over the last 40-50 years, but we are still learning about where the gaps are in terms of what the regulatory framework covers. <\/p>\n<p>I am working at the interface of atmospheric chemistry, low-cost air monitoring instruments, and community-based efforts to study and hopefully overcome air pollution exposure disparities. I have worked with low-cost monitoring of ozone, CO2, VOCs, and other gaseous compounds\/pollutants, but my main area of expertise centers on the aerosol particles that contribute to PM2.5. My PhD way-back-when was built around studying aerosol particles at regional scales, and I now mostly work at smaller spatial scales. <\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1522\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1522\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/brian-magi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2012\/03\/brian-magi-downtown-airsampling-227x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Sampling PM2.5\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1522\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-1522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sampling PM2.5 in downtown Charlotte using a &#8220;low-cost&#8221; air sensor.<\/p><\/div>One part of this research was the public release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanairenc.org\/airkeeper-dashboard\/\" target=\"_blank\">CleanAIRE NC AirKeeper Dashboard (AKD)<\/a> in June 2025. The CleanAIRE NC AirKeeper Dashboard is a digital standalone product that is free to access, and we created it to bring air pollution data together with geographic data in a North Carolina based web mapping system for anyone to explore interconnections. I was one of the authors of the CleanAIRE NC AirKeeper Dashboard manuals and guides (along with A. Strawderman from CleanAIRE NC), and the manuals and guides are at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanairenc.org\/airkeeper-dashboard\/help-center\/\" target=\"_blank\">AirKeeper Dashboard Help Center<\/a> and include \u201cAbout the AirKeeper Dashboard\u201d, \u201cNavigating the AirKeeper Dashboard\u201d, \u201cUsing the Dashboard Tools\u201d, \u201cLocation Report Help\u201d, and \u201cGlossary of Key Terms\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A lot more air quality research is in the works right now too, but TBD in terms of getting it posted here. One example is that I am working with CleanAIRE NC on community-driven questions, and leading on much of the study design and the data analysis related to those efforts.
