
{"id":108,"date":"2016-06-03T12:59:01","date_gmt":"2016-06-03T16:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/evan-wantland\/?p=108"},"modified":"2016-06-03T12:59:01","modified_gmt":"2016-06-03T16:59:01","slug":"books-summer-reading-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/evan-wantland\/blog\/2016\/06\/03\/books-summer-reading-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Books: Summer Reading 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Doesn&#8217;t everyone enjoy a good Summer read? \u00a0Most of the fiction I consume these days is in audio format, but I&#8217;ve been reluctant to leave paper books when it comes to content\u00a0for teaching or research (I write in my books). \u00a0This Summer I&#8217;ve branched out a bit, and, as usual, I&#8217;ll probably not get through it all\u00a0&#8230; we shall see.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/combinatorics-ancient-and-modern-9780199656592?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;\">Combinatorics: Ancient and Modern<\/a><\/em> (edited by Robin Wilson and John J. Watkins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/evan-wantland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/784\/2016\/06\/CombAandM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-103 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/evan-wantland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/784\/2016\/06\/CombAandM.jpg\" alt=\"CombAandM\" width=\"180\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">I&#8217;m a sucker for anything with Robin WIlson&#8217;s name on it. \u00a0I loved <a href=\"http:\/\/books.wwnorton.com\/books\/978-0-393-06027-0\/\"><em>Lewis Carroll in Numberland<\/em><\/a>, and I still use both of his Graph Theory books as references for teaching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">I probably would have gravitated toward this title regardless, and especially after I saw the list of contributors (including Donald Knuth, Victor Katz, Norman Biggs, Lars Andersen, Ian Anderson, and Peter Cameron). \u00a0After reading the introduction\u00a0(Two Thousand Years of Combinatorics by Knuth) and a quick perusal of the rest, I&#8217;m eager to\u00a0get going on this one.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/us\/academic\/subjects\/mathematics\/number-theory\/prime-numbers-and-riemann-hypothesis\">Prime Numbers and the Riemann Hypothesis<\/a> (Barry Mazur and William Stein)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/evan-wantland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/784\/2016\/06\/PNandRH.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-104 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/evan-wantland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/784\/2016\/06\/PNandRH.jpg\" alt=\"PNandRH\" width=\"180\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not a number theorist, and I fake it most of the time. \u00a0I&#8217;m hoping this book will at least make me more literate when it comes to the Riemann Hypothesis, so I can discuss it with students &#8230; but, this one is probably for my own guilty pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to try an eBook version of this one, and so far that has been a bit disappointing. \u00a0The equations seem to be rendered as images, so they don&#8217;t scale well. \u00a0I&#8217;m worried that this might become more of an issue as the math gets more involved (this one is non-trivial).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/115699\/the-drunkards-walk-by-leonard-mlodinow\/\">The Drunkard&#8217;s Walk<\/a>: How Randomness Rules our Lives (Leonard Mlodinow)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/evan-wantland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/784\/2016\/06\/DW.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-102 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/evan-wantland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/784\/2016\/06\/DW-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"DW\" width=\"180\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/evan-wantland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/784\/2016\/06\/DW-195x300.jpg 195w, http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/evan-wantland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/784\/2016\/06\/DW.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had this one for a few years, but it&#8217;s just been gathering dust on the shelf. \u00a0I&#8217;m trying to get involved with a project involving middle schoolers and probability, and I noticed a colleague carrying this around. \u00a0So, I literally blew (scrubbed?) the dust off my copy. \u00a0So far, so good. \u00a0Again, I&#8217;m looking forward to this one, and I&#8217;m guessing it will be my &#8220;Beach Book&#8221; in August.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Doesn&#8217;t everyone enjoy a good Summer read?
