Summary of Teaching:<\/strong> At UNC Charlotte, I teach Soil Science, Applied Soil Science, Geomorphology, and Advanced Geomorphology (called Landscape Assessment). Course schedules change. Contact me for upcoming offerings.<\/p>\n

I bring to the classroom my experience in fracture mechanics, geology, ecology, archaeology, environmental, and seismic-hazard applications of soil geomorphology. I focus upper-level courses around subjects such as surficial processes, soils, mechanical weathering, paleoclimatology, active tectonics, and geologic applications of GIS, and towards the applications of these subjects to students’ own research and interests.<\/p>\n

Most upper-level classes include some type of field-based research project. I always aim for publishable research – and sometimes it pays off. Here are examples of Student Class Projects with students as authors or co-authors: Shobe_et_al-2017-Earth_Surface_Processes_and_Landforms<\/a>; Aldredetal2015<\/a>; Layzell et al., SE Geo 2012<\/a>; Eppes et al., 2018<\/p>\n

Other examples of past in-class research include: Cracks and weathering of outcrops in Shenandoah National Park; Origins of gullies adjacent to a Piedmont floodplain; Laboratory method comparison for particle size analysis; Physical weathering of Table Rock, SC; A soil chrono sequence in Toby Creek, Mecklenburg County, NC; A soil geomorphic study of Mafic Bogs in NC; Soil-characterization of a UST site, Charlotte, NC; Stream piracy and fluvial geomorphology along the Blue Ridge escarpment; and Tectonic geomorphology of a closed basin in the Transverse Ranges of Southern California.<\/p>\n
