I am merely a passionate plantsman who has the privilege of teaching field botany.  I follow in the footsteps of local legends like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/news\/local\/community\/university-city\/article9239177.html\">Larry Mellichamp<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/news\/local\/community\/university-city\/article22996857.html\">Paula Gross<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gone are the days of only using Vascular Flora of the Carolinas &#8211; though its use was my rite of passage and is still a mainstay. Gone are the days of climax communities &#8211; the ever changing world and climate change make it impossible to perhaps reach such a thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the days of thinking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wildflowers-Communities-Southern-Appalachian-Mountains\/dp\/0807871729\/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=Plant+communities+of+the+southeast&amp;qid=1587259930&amp;sr=8-1\">Plant Communities<\/a> and how families fit within them. Here are the days of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/\">iNaturalist. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am a lifelong gardener and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XLnpe4PJbjU&amp;t=4864s\">use my garden to demonstrate the interrelatedness of plant familes, flowers, and fruit. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VbNuAbhL_e4&amp;t=1799s\">native woodland flowers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WJQy6ALfeCA&amp;t=14s\">ferns<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4NUtTDpqoQc&amp;t=81s\">pines<\/a> of the Southeast I&#8217;ve made videos on each of them. In fact there&#8217;s even more  on my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCH2cyqkzXYoJdvnPz7J-flg\">YouTube page<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> I&#8217;ve also enlisted the help of exceptionally artistic students to develop <strong>mnemonic<\/strong> devices that are specific to plant families.
