Also, what&#8217;s wrong with highway signs having pictures instead of words?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">21st Century Examples of Celebrating Ignorance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/e4ujS1er1r0?t=57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zac Brown Band celebrates ignorance<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azlyrics.com\/lyrics\/alanjackson\/wherewereyouwhentheworldstoppedturning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alan Jackson really celebrating ignorance<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>David Frike&#8217;s &#8220;The E Street Band Keep Rolling in &#8217;09&#8221;<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>David Frike\u2019s<\/strong> review on Canvas is a short, one-page reading I use in many classes to make various points. For our purposes, I want to focus on Fricke&#8217;s way of assembling references of other musicians to convey a representation of a Springsteen album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fricke\u2019s article is a series of prepackaged ideas that carry his discussion of the Springsteen album. Phrases such as \u201cpop stomps loaded with Beatlesque guitar jangle,\u201d \u201c1966-Beach Boys vocal harmonies,\u201d and \u201cpedal steel guitar a la Bob Dylan\u2019s Nashville Skyline\u201d (para. 3) are loaded with information\u2013hypercompressed\u2013and are references requiring readers to know them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consider audience, purpose, and situation (context):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do these references mean the same thing to every reader?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which readers will understand Fricke&#8217;s references? What might a reader need to know to get the <em>most<\/em> from this review?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is Fricke providing us with an inside-outside perspective like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthistoryproject.com\/artists\/salvador-dali\/cubist-self-portrait\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cubism<\/a><\/strong>, or is this more linear?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Imagine hypertext or links to the various sounds Fricke references.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What else does Fricke communicate with references to other musicians?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By the way, I&#8217;m an English professor with a Bob Dylan poster in my office. Clich\u00e9? Why or why not?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New Media isn&#8217;t really <em>new<\/em>; it&#8217;s an extension of configurations and constellations of different media. Content isn&#8217;t irrelevant, but it isn&#8217;t the entire body of critique; likewise, our use of technology isn&#8217;t irrelevant to cultural studies, but it also doesn&#8217;t hold the entirety of <em>meaning<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Good luck solving <strong>the cubism-linear question<\/strong>. This is what college is all about, so welcome to the first week of class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Next Class<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Try to do your Weekly Discussion Post #1 before Friday, 8\/23, 11:00pm.
