<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/charlottedebate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charlotte Debate<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Debate Practices for Fall 2025<\/strong>: Tuesdays, 5:30pm-6:30pm in Fretwell 219.<br>Contact Dr. Aaron Toscano (atoscano) for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jump Right into Debate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the first things you need to do to set up your 1st Affirmative Contention (1AC) and maybe your 1st Negative Constructive (1NC):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Thank everyone in the room or on Zoom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>State you&#8217;re affirming (or negating) the resolution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type of Resolution (pp. 5-6 in the <strong><em>West Chester University Guide<\/em><\/strong>)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Value<\/strong>&#8211;Argue what is morally, ethically, philosophically, etc. right as opposed to what is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/expedient\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expedient<\/a><\/strong>, feasible, or cost effective.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fact<\/strong>&#8211;Defend that something (usually a statement) is more true than false.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Policy<\/strong>&#8211;Some group (i.e., the US government) <strong>should<em>\/<\/em>must<em>\/<\/em>ought<\/strong> to do something.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Definitions\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Define key terms in the resolution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider which are identifiers and which are weighing mechanisms\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identifiers\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>Broadway<\/strong><\/em> is defined as the collection of theaters in New York City&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>College<\/strong><\/em> refers to post-secondary education that leads to an Associate&#8217;s, Bachelor&#8217;s, or higher degree<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weighing Mechanisms (pp. 9-11 in the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcupa.edu\/arts-humanities\/communicationStudies\/documents\/Debate%20Guide%20Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">West Chester University Guide<\/a><\/em><\/strong>)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>Best<\/strong><\/em> means the situation that leads to the most satisfaction for [whom].<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Better than<\/em><\/strong> means one thing (film, book, country, system, etc.) is superior to another thing or the <em>status quo<\/em> itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weighing Mechanism\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is also known as your &#8220;values&#8221;&#8211;don&#8217;t confuse these with &#8220;voters&#8221; It might be good to review pages 9-11 in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/aaron-toscano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/121\/2025\/02\/lee_ipda_manual_-_abridged_-_2018.pdf#page=10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lee College GUIDE TO IPDA DEBATE<\/a><\/strong> on &#8220;Rebuttals&#8221; to remind yourselves of the goal of the rebuttals&#8211;to capitalize on your strongest arguments.
