When academics started discussion new media, circa 2000, social media wasn&#8217;t a thing. There was blogging, but, if someone wanted to reach a lot of people, they had to go through the newspager (c.f. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ted_Kaczynski\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Theodore &#8220;Ted&#8221; Kaczynski<\/a>). Now, virtually (pun intended) anyone can reach millions of people through social media; however, as our previous reading (Curran, Fenton, Freedman) explained, not everyone has the same reach, number of followers, or popularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s start by listing social media sites and commenting on their purposes. After all, some are more useful for some activities\/discussions than others: Facebook vs Pinterest vs eHarmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hank Green&#8217;s An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, pp. 1-118<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll most likely not get to this until Wednesday, 11\/06, but I&#8217;d like to get you thinking about some questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why is this novel relevant to this semester&#8217;s class?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you notice any of April&#8217;s personality traits that might signal a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.addictioncenter.com\/behavioral-addictions\/social-media-addiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social media addiction<\/a><\/strong>?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What makes social media seem addictive? (I realize not all psychological professionals consider social media and video games addictions)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender\/sexuality anyone?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How might this book fit our discussion of postmodern texts?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Random quotes from the first third of the book:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>p. 11: &#8220;&#8230;fine art is like art that exists for its own sake&#8230;.Design is art that does something else. Thus, they&#8217;re probably one of the most powerful people in the world.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>p. 71: &#8220;&#8230;in creating the April May brand, I was very much creating a new me. You can only do so much pretending before you become the thing you&#8217;re pretending to be.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>p. 102: &#8220;I wanted my tweets to be as viral as my first video.
