Hector St. John.<\/strong>&nbsp;de Cr\u00e8vecoeur<\/strong> <strong>\u201cWhat is an American?\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Democracy\/Liberty\/Freedom\/ETC. quotation:<br>\u201cRemember Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself.\u201d<br>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/founders.archives.gov\/documents\/Adams\/99-02-02-6371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Adams. \u201cFrom John Adams to John Taylor,\u201d 17 Dec 1814<\/a>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Taylor_of_Caroline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Taylor<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(a Virginian) wrote&nbsp;<em>An Inquiry into the Principles and Policy of the Government of the United States<\/em>, which Adams had problems with, and wrote Taylor about his concerns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"background-color:yellow\">Because we didn&#8217;t discuss this last class, I&#8217;m just moving it to today.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why do we think Adams had that attitude about democracy?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reading Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I am concerned that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/388541\/americans-reading-fewer-books-past.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Americans are reading fewer books<\/a><\/strong>. As an English professor, curious person, and son of a librarian, I find it vital for engaged citizens and critical thinkers to read. I have told you that I have biases, and I will identify them&#8211;this is one of them. Reading helps you sustain attention to an argument. When you read a lot, you&#8217;re able to comprehend not just the words on the page but also meanings that are hidden, subtle, or perspectival. The more you read, in theory, the more curious you become, which leads to asking more effective questions. I&#8217;m not discounting that one can actively watch TV and films, but there&#8217;s more <em>struggle<\/em> in reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s special about the readings I assign is that they require delayed gratification. These readings will build on American principles related to democracy to help us better identify rhetorical strategies that reappear across our readings. I&#8217;m asking you to read for both content (Jefferson wrote, &#8220;&#8230;all men are created equal&#8230;&#8221;) as well as rhetorical techniques (Abigail Adams invokes divine plans to motivate Johns Adams to &#8220;Remember the Ladies&#8221;). This course is mandated because the State has an interest in your civic education, but I have an interest in your intellectual development, and these readings and the approach we&#8217;re taking serves both these purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What did these founders have in common?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What give us a right to know?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s head over to&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/aaron-toscano\/amdm2025\/amdm2025august26\/meckdecsaga1775\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new page<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;that houses our discussion points and notes about this perplexing document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Enlightenment Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned last class on the first day, The Renaissance gave way to The Enlightenment in Western Civilization. This period is marked by scientific advancements and philosophical ideals that make up this <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Age_of_Enlightenment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Age of Reason.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> In this post-Scientific Revolution era, we see calls for rethinking and even dismantling traditional institutions, specifically Church and Monarchical State. Publishing was widespread, so people were reading about these thinkers and <strong>debating<\/strong> their merits. Some ideas that come out of the era are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liberalism#Classical_and_modern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classic liberalism<\/a><\/strong>: the state may not enroach on citizens\u2019 rights or property without due process; the people are no longer merely subjects of a monarch.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>John Locke&#8217;s idea of the social contract needed to bind individuals together is relevant here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>scientific revolution\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>scientific method: creating knowledge through hypothesis, observation, and testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>falsifiability: an experiment&#8217;s hypothesis is open to being <em>not demonstrated<\/em>* based on testing methods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the public sphere: where ideas circulate among citizens<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief History Lesson: The Public Sphere as Enlightenment Phenomenon<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 18th century (the 1700s), pamphlets and newspapers circulated spreading ideas to the masses, who engaged in conversations (dare I say <strong>debates<\/strong>) about the topics. A starting point for an academic discussion of the public sphere comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J%C3%BCrgen_Habermas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>J\u00fcrgen Habermas<\/strong><\/a>, but that&#8217;s a bit beyond the scope of this class. For now, just consider that we&#8217;re reading documents from a <em>revolutionary<\/em> time. Think back to your history classes about&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/French-Revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the French Revolution<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(1789) or, perhaps,&nbsp;<strong>Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/strong>&nbsp;(<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cjp-Gyo5tNM\">\u201cred\u2026.and black\u2026\u201d<\/a><\/strong>). You may remember the Estates General that \u201cadvised\u201d the monarch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First Estate<\/strong>: Church\/Clergy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Second Estate<\/strong>: Nobility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Third Estate<\/strong>: Peasants\u2026(<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h0iAcQVIokg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">They\u2019re revolting!<\/a><\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, the Press would become known as&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fourth_Estate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Fourth Estate<\/a><\/strong>, which supports Habermas\u2019s idea that newspapers are important for forming &#8220;public opinion.&#8221; As feudalism and monarchy, in general, gave way to more representative, classical liberal forms of government, the public (citizens) deliberated on policy and elected representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are some other definitions related to our <strong>Enlightenment<\/strong> discussion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>objectivity<\/strong>: an unbiased approach to knowledge making, communicating, and deliberating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>subjectivity<\/strong>: a more personal reference to \u201ctruth\u201d based on one\u2019s perspective and interpretation of phenomena.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intersubjectivity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">intersubjective<\/a><\/strong>: a group consensus of those with similar backgrounds and\/or commitments to knowledge creation; sometimes called \u201cexpert opinion\u201d in the case of specialized discourse communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/conventional%20wisdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conventional wisdom<\/a><\/strong>: general assumptions of knowledge that are culturally defined (although not seen as culturally relative by adherents)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/common%20sense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">common sense<\/a><\/strong>: pragmatic responses and decisions to events, including taken-for-granted socially constructed conventional wisdom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rationality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rationality<\/a><\/strong>: pursuing knowledge creation and communication based on convention and observable evidence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/rationality-instrumental\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instrumental rationality<\/a><\/strong>: a&nbsp;<em>means justifies the ends<\/em>&nbsp;approach where one bases conclusions on what appears most pragmatic and, therefore, situationally advantageous. If a choice fulfills one\u2019s ends, it\u2019s situationally rational; however, assuming that\u2019s the only way to think is rather myopic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>de Cr\u00e8vecoeur&#8217;s &#8220;What is an American?&#8221;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason this piece is in the class is because it gives us some insight into the make up of the early Colonies. John Hector St. John.&nbsp;de Cr\u00e8vecoeur is most likely embellishing the successes he finds, but it&#8217;s his message that is important. In addition to identifying the rhetorical techniques he uses and comparing them to other texts in class, we ought to think about the text as a place reproducing values. This socially constructed text gets published and re-presents the immigrant experience, especially the assumption of doing well for oneself. Beside this being a narrative in American culture today, it can help us understand motivations to <strong><em>engage with democracy<\/em><\/strong> and American culture. First, who was de Cr\u00e8vecoeur?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Born to wealthy parents in France (1735)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fought for the French in the French and Indian War<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moved to New York and bought a farm in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/GbDbXhYx4HzBo6AR8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chester, NY<\/a><\/strong>, northeast of New York City<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Returned to Europe and published <em>Letters from an American Farmer<\/em> in 1782<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This was a popular book and led to his being named a diplomat\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>George Washington and Thomas Jeferson admired the book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Returned to the US to find his wife dead, children missing, and farm destroyed (1783)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Published more books on America and, of course, wrote more letters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Guiding Questions for de Cr\u00e8vecoeur<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I have another webpage devoted to good ol&#8217; Jean or John or James, so let&#8217;s consider these questions before <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/aaron-toscano\/amdm2025\/amdm2025august28\/whatisanamerican\/\">jumping on over to &#8220;What is an American?&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>. His audience was Europeans, but colonists did read this book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What does de Cr\u00e8vecoeur&#8217;s text communicate about civilization, especially European influence?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What about education?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As a farmer, the land is vital to de Cr\u00e8vecoeur. What does he say about the land?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How does he characterize the indigenous peoples?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are important values to him regarding hardwork.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is his message about hard work and the land?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This question is important because de Cr\u00e8vecoeur has an assumption about usefullness and, ultimately, who gets to control the land.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Next Week<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next Tuesday, 9\/2, we&#8217;ll be covering the US Constitution!
