In fact, it&#8217;s difficult to do Billions justice when considering it&#8217;s had 6 seasons. Although the two shows are certainly related, <em>Succession<\/em> has a sinister familial drama that requires a psychoanalytic reading to best compare it to <em>Billions<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/aaron-toscano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/121\/2022\/11\/ManhattanCropped.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/aaron-toscano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/121\/2022\/11\/ManhattanCropped-1024x579.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9320\" width=\"587\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/aaron-toscano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/121\/2022\/11\/ManhattanCropped-1024x579.png 1024w, https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/aaron-toscano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/121\/2022\/11\/ManhattanCropped-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/aaron-toscano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/121\/2022\/11\/ManhattanCropped-768x434.png 768w, https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/aaron-toscano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/121\/2022\/11\/ManhattanCropped.png 1058w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Still from the opening credits of <em>Billions<\/em>, Showtime.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some Tenets of Neoliberalism<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Markets should drive all economic decisions;<\/li><li>Anti-collective bargaining, anti-union;<\/li><li>Calls for limited government, but these are empty calls;<\/li><li>Socialize risks but privatize the profits: think \u201ctoo big to fail\u201d and guaranteed revenue for, say, a public-private partnership on toll lanes;<\/li><li>An expansion of the capitalist push to commodify nearly everything.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Few Other Points to Consider<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Jodi Dean: \u201c<strong>neoliberalism<\/strong>\u00a0is a philosophy viewing market exchange as a guide for all human action\u201d (p. 48)<\/li><li>Remember, neoliberalism, like <em><em>Citizens United v. FEC<\/em><\/em>, isn&#8217;t anti-American: it&#8217;s anti-democratic because power is held disproportionally by an oligarchy, but that is 100% aligned with American history.<\/li><li>Ideal assumption of democracy being rule by the people.<\/li><li><em>Rhetoric of democracy<\/em> is the discourse people profess to support democracy but do so in name only.<\/li><li>Mark fisher attributes this to Fredric Jameson and Slavoj \u017di\u017eek: &#8220;it is easier to imagine an end to the world than an end to capitalism&#8221; (p. 2)<\/li><li>Mark Fisher also discusses consensual confabulations, \u201cthe world we experience is a solipsistic delusion projected from the interior of our mind\u2026[, and] it conforms with our infantile fantasies of omnipotence.\u201d<\/li><li>Anthony Giddens <strong>Structuration Theory<\/strong>: &#8220;&#8230;all forms of dependence offer some resources whereby those who are subordinate can influence the activities of their superiors&#8221; (16).<ul><li>Neoliberal media relates to this idea because the audience may assume boycotts and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/us\/dictionary\/english\/buycott\" target=\"_blank\">buycotts<\/a> influence corporate decisions.<\/li><li>They aren&#8217;t wrong about that, but the power structure remains in place, and they go back to idling their cars in the fast food drive through&#8230;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Everyday Consumption and Gambling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as an entrepreneur may risk investment to get rewards, the everyday consumer can risk a little to a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lotteries: Powerall, scratch offs, sweepstakes<\/li><li>Keno<\/li><li>Sports betting apps<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nclottery.com\/Site\/GFX\/NCEL_web.svg\" alt=\"\" width=\"531\" height=\"163\" \/><figcaption>Remember, you&#8217;re doing it for the children!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Neoliberal Entertainment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Acclimating audiences to neoliberal ideology<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Shark Tank<\/em><\/li><li><em>The Apprentice<\/em><\/li><li><em>Flip This House<\/em><ul><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/perfectionhangover.com\/how-to-flip-a-house-for-profit-when-you-live-in-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Blog on DIY Entrepreneurialism<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><em>Billions<\/em>, <em>Succession<\/em>, etc.<ul><li>Stylish<\/li><li>Decisive<\/li><li>Clairvoyant<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t have enough hours in the day to discuss the relationship to Multi-level Marketing (MLM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What&#8217;s Your Number?
