Background & Context
Dr. Smith grew up in a low-income family and is a first generation college graduate. He credits much of his clinical and academic success to several influential educators who inspired and mentored him through his clinical and academic pursuits. Dr. Smith believes that faculty in higher education have an ethical obligation to “give back” to the academic community by inspiring and mentoring others.
Philosophy
Dr. Smith believes everyone is unique and interprets their environment and experiences based largely on previous experiences. We hear others’ speech and witness their behaviors, but we rarely know or understand the prior experiences that informed their words and behaviors – why a student didn’t complete an assignment or seems to be giving up entirely – or why this week they overcome every challenge and next week they stumble with every assignment. Dr. Smith believes his duty is to simply be a positive, supportive, and kind experience for students, and the world around him, both in and out of the classroom.
Dualistic Transactions
Dr. Smith respects autonomy and diversity of culture and thought – and not just thoughts that align with his own, but also dissenting views. As such, Dr. Smith supports students in their journey, and seeks to inspire students to be the best versions of themselves, promote their autonomy, independent thinking, and psychological well-being, and guide students toward self-actualization. Dr. Smith believes interacting with students is a dualistic transaction where he learns at least as much from students as he hopes they learn from him
