As the official religion of the Roman Empire\nsince the Emperor Theodosius (379-395), it has shaped the culture and politics\nof Europe. Yet, many remain ignorant of Christianity\u2019s internal development and\ncultural impact. A variety of misconceptions flourish. The purpose of this\ncourse is twofold: 1) to provide a historically reliable summary of\nChristianity from the time of Constantine until just prior to the Protestant Reformation;\nand, 2) to show how Christianity was shaped by, and gave shape to, diverse\npolitical and cultural worlds in that time period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This course\nalso focuses on the Trinitarian and Christological controversies that plagued\nany effort at achieving unity of belief across the empire. Arianism,\nMonarchianism, Nestorianism, Monophysitism, Iconoclasm, and other -isms\ncompeted with the emerging orthodox resolution to the nature of Christ and the\nrelationships, or \u201cdivine economy,\u201d of the Trinity. These controversies and\naccompanying political involvement, led to the Great Schism between Eastern\nOrthodoxy and Western Catholicism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process\nwhereby popes, monks, and German kings formed a new society in Europe called\nChristendom will also be explored for both its positive cultural\naccomplishments (cathedrals, universities) and its more negative political\nadventures (Crusades, investiture, inquisition). What were the roles played by\nmonks and mendicants, mystics and inquisitors, crusaders and theologians, popes\nand peasants? We will examine both the glory of the medieval synthesis and the\nelements of corruption that called for reform, a call that many heeded even\nbefore the Reformation of the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Course Summary The importance of the Christian religious tradition to history is undeniable, whatever one\u2019s personal faith.
