The Chemistry Stockroom serves three major purposes within the Chemistry Department. First, we stock and supply most common, and some uncommon, chemicals to research and teaching labs within the Chemistry Department. Members of the Chemistry Department may search our inventory system to see if a chemical is available. Chemicals and common laboratory glassware are available to Department researchers.
The Chemistry Stockroom also prepares and distributes all chemicals, solutions and equipment for undergraduate and graduate teaching labs. We prepare several hundred liters of acids, bases and other solutions each semester for use in the teaching labs, maintain the supply of solvents and chemicals for the many upper level labs, setup and maintain lab equipment (Spect-20, pH meters, balances, etc.) and manage the student and common use equipment drawers. We also clean and inventory all lab rooms between semesters as time permits.
The Chemistry Stockroom is the point of entry for all deliveries in the Chemistry Department. All purchases and other deliveries are received in the Chemistry Stockroom, except for mail. Once received, we inspect and process each package insuring that the materials received, the packing invoice and purchase order are in agreement. If the package contains chemicals, we enter them into our Inventory Control System, tagging the chemicals with a department bar code, date received and other pertinent information. We then deliver the packages to the appropriate lab or office.
Other responsibilities of the Chemistry Stockroom include inventory control, first aid center, lab safety and maintenance reporting.
The Chemistry Stockroom has three full-time staff. We have a number of dedicated undergraduate students from various disciplines – Chemistry, Biology, Nursing, and others – working in the Chemistry Stockroom to help with student needs, prepare materials for labs, clean glassware and other Stockroom duties.
