Ordinal Numerals
Ordinals are adjectives. Look at their endings in the second column: they have all three varieties of masculine endings: the hard ones -ЫЙ, -О́Й and the soft one -ИЙ (третИЙ – 3rd) in masculine gender.
Cardinals | Ordinals |
оди́н | пе́рвый – first |
два | второ́й – second |
три | тре́тий – third |
четы́ре | четвёртый – fourth |
пять | пя́тый – fifth |
шесть | шесто́й – sixth |
семь | седьмо́й – seventh |
во́семь | восьмо́й – eighth |
де́вять | девя́тый – ninth |
де́сять | деся́тый – tenth |
As true adjectives, ordinals agree with the noun in gender, number and case. They adopt
-АЯ in feminine endings (except “тре́тья” 3rd, which is a soft ending) and -OE in neuter (except “тре́тье,” 3rd, a soft ending).

Warning: So far, you can use numbers only in a limited way – just naming them (cardinals) or defining things (ordinals) like in the examples below. You’ll be able to use them properly with nouns after you study the genitive case.
