While in undergraduate school he did a 10 week internship at University at Albany College of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering where he studied fluorescent properties of quantum dots when excited with an argon laser. In 2010 he received his PhD in Chemistry from North Carolina State University. His PhD work involved using scanning probe microscopy and cyclic voltammetry to study the kinetics of exchange of self-assembled monlayer films with other molecules. Also, his worked involved fabricating nanostructures in these films and studying the formation of defects in these films. Since joining the Infrared Systems Lab at UNC-Charlotte in the summer of 2012, he has worked on the design, fabrication, and measurement of sub-wavelength structures, metamaterials, and antennas. The design portion of the research is done with numerical modeling with Ansys HFSS and Comsol Multiphysics, then subsequent GDS file creation. Fabrication is done typically with standard semiconductor processing such as spin coating resist, e-beam writing, metallization, lift-off, etc. Finally, various Near-field and far-field optical measurements are done to characterize these structures (NSOM, Scattering, FT-IR, ellipsometry, etc). Data analysis, fitting, and processing is typically done with custom made Matlab scripts and GUIs while some fitting is done in Origin Lab.

Publications

Journal Articles

E.
