Peterson <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-sa\/3.0\/deed.en_US\" rel=\"license\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-width: 0\" src=\"http:\/\/i.creativecommons.org\/l\/by-nc-sa\/3.0\/80x15.png\" alt=\"Creative Commons License\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Despite a shared interest in social sustainability, academics, professionals and policymakers often hold varying perspectives about what social sustainability is, and how it can be implemented and assessed.<\/p>\n<p>We began our network by trying to forge a definition of social sustainability, but have come to appreciate the value of a <em>holistic<\/em> idea of sustainability that does not differentiate between social, environmental, and economic sustainability because in our experiences, these distinctions are superficial and unhelpful. Our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2071-1050\/8\/9\/878\">recent paper<\/a>\u00a0 and special issue outlines some of our ideas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some Definitions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\">&#8220;Social sustainability is a quality of societies. It signifies the nature-society relationships, mediated by work, as well as relationships within the society. Social sustainability is given, if work within a society and the related institutional arrangements<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>satisfy an extended set of human needs<\/li>\n<li>are shaped in a way that nature and its reproductive capabilities are preserved over a long period of time and the normative claims of social justice, human dignity and participation are fulfilled.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From\u00a0Beate Littig, Erich Grie\u03b2ler 2005\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/inderscience.metapress.com\/content\/f25bn5m036587clr\/\">Social sustainability: a catchword between political pragmatism and social theory<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/inderscience.metapress.com\/content\/110889\/?p=f071f639649b4018b8a64b22d2b5028a&amp;pi=0\">International Journal of Sustainable Development<\/a>\u00a08(1-2):65-79, p 72.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Social Sustainability is:<\/strong> a positive condition within communities, and a process within communities that can achieve that condition.&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/w3.unisa.edu.au\/hawkeinstitute\/publications\/downloads\/wp27.pdf\">Stephen McKenzie 2004 Hawke Research Institute Working Paper Series No 27 SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY: TOWARDS SOME DEFINITIONS. Cities 10 139 &#8211; 157, page 140<\/p>\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Social sustainability<\/strong>\u00a0is one aspect of\u00a0sustainability\u00a0or\u00a0sustainable development. Social sustainability encompasses\u00a0human rights,\u00a0labor rights, and\u00a0corporate governance. In common with\u00a0environmental sustainability, social sustainability is the idea that future generations should have the same or greater access to social resources as the current generation (&#8220;inter-generational equity&#8221;), while there should also be equal access to social resources\u00a0<em>within<\/em>\u00a0the current generation (&#8220;intra-generational equity&#8221;).
