Climate Stories NC seeks to capture the voices of ordinary North Carolinians\u2014farmers, hunters, beekeepers, fishermen, Christmas tree growers and others whose lives have been affected by changes in the climate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Friday, June 8:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">8:30 a.m. Understanding the Role of integrated Sustainability in Security and Prosperity<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Come enjoy light breakfast and a discussion with\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\" href=\"https:\/\/manhattan.edu\/campus-directory\/poonam.arora\">Poonam Arora<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This talk explores linkages between the three types of sustainability and the crucial role that businesses and decision makers have in supporting integrated sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Saturday, June 9:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">9:00 a.m. \u2013 9:30 a.m. Networking and Check-In<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">9:30 a.m. \u2013 10:45 a.m. Welcome, Keynote Speak, and Self-Serve Breakfast<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are excited to have\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naacp.org\/naacp-leadership\/jacqueline-patterson\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jacqueline Patterson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the Director of Environmental and Climate Justice at NAACP giving our keynote address.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>11:00 a.m. \u2013 12:30 p.m.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following workshops\/discussions will be available during this time block<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Making Room\u2014Affordable Housing for Everyone<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This workshop, led by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onemeck.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OneMECK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, will discuss the barriers to affordable housing in Charlotte and American metropolitan regions, in general with panelists Carol Hardison (Crisis Assistance Ministry), Pam Jefsen (Supportive Housing Communities), Justin Perry (OneMECK), and Judy Seldin-Cohen (author and \u2018A Way Home\u2019 rental subsidies program) and moderator Angie Forde (St. Martin\u2019s Episcopal Church)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Transportation Choices for a Sustainable Future<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following a presentation about Charlotte\u2019s transportation challenges and opportunities led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustaincharlotte.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sustain Charlotte<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we\u2019ll take a short guided walk to the Seventh Street Public Market and Charlotte Transportation Center to learn how different modes of transportation can be used together<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Local Water Quality and Water Resources<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this discussion, participants will learn about our natural and man-made water resources. Topics will include water treatment, stormwater, BMPs, and specific actions citizens can take improve our waters<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Land Conservation and the Carolina Thread Trail<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Matt Covington, Land Acquisition Director of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/catawbalands.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Catawba Lands Conservancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and Bret Baronak, Community Coordinator of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carolinathreadtrail.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carolina Thread Trail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0will discuss land protection efforts in the Charlotte region as well as the Thread Trail\u2019s efforts to create a regional trail system, and how that complements land conservation activities<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">12:30 p.m. \u2013 1:45 p.m. State of Sustainability in Charlotte Presentation and Lunch<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How are we doing? Are we making any progress? Where do we need to focus more? Join this session for a \u201cstate of local sustainability\u201d regarding encouraging recent trends and the challenges that remain to improve sustainability in the Charlotte region from Sustain Charlotte and INSS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2:00 p.m. \u2013 3:00 p.m. Sustainability Workshop Block 2<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Public Service and Sustainability in the Charlotte Region<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This panel, moderated by State Representative and former Charlotte City Council Member John Autry, will discuss the role of citizen advisory boards, how they have contributed to local plans and policy decisions, what barriers their members face as they attempt to influence policy, and ways that others can get involved. Participants will include members of the Charlotte\u2019s Bicycle Advisory Committee, the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Committee, the Transit Services Advisory Board, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Plan Commission<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sustainability and Waste 101<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Join\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crowntowncompost.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crown Town Compost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0for a workshop on composting, landfilling, recycling, waste policy, and the state of waste in Mecklenburg County. They will discuss Mecklenburg County\u2019s waste policy and breakdown what to compost and recycle and why as well as environmental justice concerns<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Planning for Greenways and Parks Workshop Part 1<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/greenwaysformeck.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Greenways for Mecklenburg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0will host a session that will include speakers and hands-on breakout sessions that is intended to involve both community leaders and invited staff from city and county departments to identify future \u2018Dirtway\u2019 projects along the proposed greenway planning map.\u00a0Primary facilitators will include Greenway for Mecklenburg founding board members Brett Tempest, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNC Charlotte, and Rick Winiker, local criminal defense attorney and Vice-chair of the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Commission<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Energy and Policy<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The City of Charlotte\u2019s Director of Sustainability, Robert Phocas, will give an update on the resolution and the Strategic Energy Action Plan<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">3:15 p.m. \u2013 4:15 p.m. Sustainability Workshop Block 3<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Monitoring Air Quality in Local Communities<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanaircarolina.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clean Air Carolina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is leading this workshop on the advances in smart, portable air sensors that enable AirKeepers to see the results right on site. The data collected will allow scientists, health experts, and environmental advocates to leverage this information to fight air pollution like never before, engage individuals, and promote better outcomes for all<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Innovative Approaches to Improving Healthy, Local Food<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Led by the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlottefoodpolicy.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Charlotte-Mecklenburg Food Policy Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, panelists will discuss how school gardens, mobile markets, sustainable farming practices and supporting local farms are all essential to building a sustainable local food system here in Mecklenburg County.
