D\u0101wud and Christ (upon whom be peace) there were prophets and virtuous servants, among them (being) Jeremiah; Daniel; Ezra, although a few people strip him of prophetic status; Job; Isaiah; Ezekiel; Elijah; Elisha; Jonah; Dh\u016b al-Kifl; al-Khidr, whom Ibn Ishaq says is Jeremiah, but of whom it is said (by others) that he was a virtuous servant; and Zakariyy\u0101\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Zakariyy\u0101\u2019 was the son of \u2019\u0100daq, one of the descendants of David from the tribe of Judah.\u00a0He married I\u0161b\u0101\u2018 (i.e., Elizabeth) the daughter of \u2018Imr\u0101n and the sister of Maryam the daughter of \u2018Imr\u0101n (and) the mother of Christ.\u00a0This \u2018Imr\u0101n was the son of M\u0101r\u0101n who was the son of Yo\u2018\u0101qim, also a descendant of David.\u00a0The name of the mother of I\u0161b\u0101\u2018 and Maryam was Hannah.\u00a0She (i.e., I\u0161b\u0101\u2018) bore Yahy\u0101 to Zakariyy\u0101\u2019, and thus Yahy\u0101 was the son of the aunt of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Zakariyy\u0101\u2019 was a carpenter.\u00a0The Jews relate that he committed the sin of adultery with Maryam, and they (plotted to) kill him.\u00a0When he realized what they (were planning), he went to a tree and then entered its trunk, but Ibl\u012bs, the enemy of God, pointed him out to them, and they sawed down the tree with him inside of it.\u00a0They cut it into pieces, and they dismembered him at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>After I\u0161b\u0101\u2018 the daughter of \u2018Imr\u0101n (and) sister of Maryam the mother of Christ bore Yahy\u0101 the son of Zakariyy\u0101\u2019, she fled with him to Egypt on account of the hatred of the king.\u00a0When he became an adult, God sent him to the children of Israel.\u00a0He endorsed the authority of God and communicated it to them, but they killed him.\u00a0Events multiplied among the children of Israel, and God sent against them a king from the East whose name was Khard\u016b\u0161 (i.e., Herod).\u00a0He killed some of them because of the blood of Yahy\u0101 the son of Zakariyy\u0101\u2019, two thousand of the people, until the blood became still after a lengthy situation (of bubbling?).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Translated from the Arabic text provided by Mas\u2018\u016bd\u012b, Mur\u016bj al-dhahab wa-ma\u2018\u0101din al-jawhar: Les prairies d\u2019or (9 vols.; ed.
