Class Participation/Discussion
(10%)
Because this class functions as a seminar and not a lecture course, important emphasis is placed on student discussion of the reading and will count as 15% of your grade. Students are required to bring the book under discussion. It is not enough to just talk. Discussion must be substantive and related to the reading.

UNC Charlotte Atkins Library Special Collections, Manuscripts on Education in Charlotte

Heritage Quest online:  This is often considered a genealogy tool, but will be useful in exploring the U.S. Census and City Directories among other databases.

Charlotte Public Library Robinson-Spangler Room (Main Branch) provides excellent resources on local history.

History Databases available through Atkins Library

North Carolina Newspapers
Through NCLive Atkins Library now has access to the Historic North Carolina Digital Newspaper Collection through Newspapers.com.  This provides access to 3.5 million pages of digitized content from over 1,000 NC county newspapers.  The coverage is mostly 19th century and early 20th century but there are some papers from the mid-20th century.  You can access it from this link https://librarylink.uncc.edu/login?url=http://www.nclive.org/cgi-bin/nclsm?rsrc=411 or from the Databases tab on the library homepage.  You can browse available newspapers by location or date and search by keyword(s), location and date.  Here is a link to the title list sorted by location: https://docs.google.com/a/uncc.edu/spreadsheets/d/1OWR861g1XMiTrZh98KljEpb4_-c4lRey7GnjzT6_9_A/edit?usp=sharing
