{"id":350,"date":"2012-11-30T20:38:22","date_gmt":"2012-11-30T20:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/katherine-stephenson\/?page_id=350"},"modified":"2017-08-22T04:29:00","modified_gmt":"2017-08-22T04:29:00","slug":"study-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/katherine-stephenson\/courses\/french-for-reading-knowledge\/study-guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"Study Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Je suis<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> Charlie<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sanserif\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Je suis<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> Paris \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Je <span style=\"color: #ffff00\">suis<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Bruxelles<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><ul class=\"list-pages\"><li class=\"page_item page-item-346\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/katherine-stephenson\/courses\/french-for-reading-knowledge\/course-description\/\">Course Description<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"page_item page-item-348\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/katherine-stephenson\/courses\/french-for-reading-knowledge\/syllabus\/\">Syllabus<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"page_item page-item-350\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/katherine-stephenson\/courses\/french-for-reading-knowledge\/study-guidelines\/\">Study Guidelines<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"page_item page-item-354\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/katherine-stephenson\/courses\/french-for-reading-knowledge\/class-notes\/\">Class Notes<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"page_item page-item-352\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/katherine-stephenson\/courses\/french-for-reading-knowledge\/announcements\/\">Announcements<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>[Use Chrome or Firefox as your browser for full functionality on this page.]<\/p>\n<h2>Study Suggestions for FREN 2200\/FRAN 2050<\/h2>\n<p>Success in FREN 2200\/FRAN 2050 depends primarily on how you organize your time and structure your activities.\u00a0 Students who do well have worked out effective study procedures and habits.\u00a0 Students\u00a0who do not do well usually fail to do something important.\u00a0 The following suggestions will help you focus on those procedures that have proved to be effective in FREN 2200\/FRAN 2050.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"study-guide-list\">\n<li>You will need to spend a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">minimum<\/span> of two hours preparing for each hour in class (see <strong>Course Load in<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.uncc.edu\/undergraduate-catalogs\/current\/degree-requirements-academic-regulations#academic-credit\">UNC Charlotte Catalog<\/a><\/em><\/strong>).\u00a0 It\u2019s not a good idea to do all the work in one sitting.\u00a0 Break up the two hours into shorter sessions so you can focus and retain what you study.\u00a0 Studies have shown that you retain the most material by studying in 30-minute sessions spread out throughout the day and right before going to sleep.\u00a0 It may take you longer than two hours to learn the material, especially if it\u2019s been awhile since your last French course.\u00a0 Your job is to spend the amount of time it takes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">you<\/span> to learn the material.<\/li>\n<li>Attend all classes and arrive on time (3 lates will count as 1 absence in calculating your class grade).\u00a0 While you are in class, be ready to work.\u00a0 If you have any questions or problems, contact your instructor right away.\u00a0 If you wait until just before tests or other deadlines, it will often be too late.<\/li>\n<li>Begin the study of each lesson by checking the online syllabus for assignments and the class web page for pertinent material.\u00a0 The latest revision date of the online syllabus is indicated in the top heading, so if you print out the syllabus, always make sure you have a printout of the latest version.\u00a0 Assignments are due by class-time on the day under which they appear on the syllabus.\u00a0 Even if you miss class, you may turn in assignments as an email attachment.\u00a0 No late homework is accepted since answer keys are made available after class.\u00a0 Make sure to start assignments early enough so that if you have problems with your computer, you can complete your assignment(s) before class time at one of the campus computer labs open 24\/7.\u00a0 All assignments relate to the class grammar text <em>Reading French in the Arts and Sciences<\/em> unless otherwise indicated (i.e., exercises relating to the other text in the course will have <em>Panach\u00e9 litt\u00e9raire<\/em> indicated in the assignment on the syllabus; we don\u2019t start using this text until about the fifth week of class).\u00a0 All exercises and tests in <em>Reading French in the Arts and Sciences<\/em> are to be submitted before class over <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> (see Homework, below).\u00a0 All underlined items on the syllabus are links to various class materials which you must print out, complete, and bring to class on the days they are due.<\/li>\n<li>General guidelines for turning in grammar homework assignments: 1) at home or on campus, study grammar for the chapter in Stack grammar book, using the chapter\u2019s grammar review sheet (print out from <a title=\"Class Notes\" href=\"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/katherine-stephenson\/courses\/french-for-reading-knowledge\/class-notes\/\">Class Notes<\/a>) to take notes; complete and turn in chapter exercises over <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> before the class period covering that grammar; 2) in class, cover questions and check random grammar points on grammar review sheet, check random items from exercises, and sight-read excerpted materials in Stack grammar book; 3) after class, complete and turn in test on the chapter\u2019s grammar over <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> before the following class.Remember, should you have any problems with <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> not working correctly, you must contact <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> Student Support, NOT the professor, by contacting the Student Computing Help Center (see <a href=\"http:\/\/labs.uncc.edu\/gethelp\/help.html\">http:\/\/labs.uncc.edu\/gethelp\/help.html<\/a>).\u00a0 Do not contact the professor for help, for she only has control over her own web pages. <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> Support, not the professor, maintains <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a>.\u00a0 Please report your problems immediately, for if you don\u2019t, you will continue to have them, and I will not excuse late or missed work for unreported problems.The exercises for chapters 1-17 in the Stack grammar book listed on the syllabus are to be completed and submitted over <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> before class (see Canvas links Getting Started with Canvas for Students <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-2036\">https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-2036<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-4121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canvas Student Guide<\/a>\u00a0https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-4121). \u00a0It\u2019s not necessary to look up all the words you don\u2019t know in a dictionary, because the <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a>\u00a0exercises indicate if your answers are right.\u00a0 You must submit at least one version of each chapter\u2019s set of exercises with all answers filled in to get credit for doing each set of exercises.\u00a0 The content of these exercises is not graded by the professor, and since <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> may not correctly grade them (e.g., it won\u2019t recognize misspelled words, answers with punctuation, etc.), you should ignore whatever grade <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> assigns to these exercises.\u00a0 Use the answer key to determine if your answers are correct or contain errors, and if you are unsure about any answer, email the professor for help in determining if your answer is correct or not.\u00a0 You may repeat these exercises as often as you like, both before the due date and throughout the semester.\u00a0 Your exercise grade for the course will be computed based simply on the number of them you complete by the due date (e.g., if there are 10 exercises and you complete all 10 before each one\u2019s due date, your exercise grade is 100; if you complete 9 out of 10, the grade is 90, etc.). The tests for chapters 1-17 in the Stack grammar book are to be completed and submitted over\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> after covering the grammar in class but before the following class period. \u00a0You may repeat these tests as often as you like, both before the due date and throughout the semester. <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> will partially grade the tests and the professor will complete grading them after the due date for each test, so don\u2019t pay attention to the initial grade assigned by <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a>.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve done a test multiple times before the due date, the one with the highest <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/canvas.uncc.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canvas<\/a> grade will be chosen by the professor to finish grading.\u00a0 Your test grade for the course will be computed based on the average of the grades computed by the professor for each test.The Translation assignments are taken from the Stack textbook.\u00a0 These are usually excerpts from various texts in the Arts and Sciences which you will translate using a dictionary and the reference materials from the course.\u00a0 The translation does not have to parallel the sophisticated style of the original, but you must use good standard conversational English.\u00a0 Do not produce a translation which sounds like French;
