The sixth annual Seuss-a-Thon took place this past Saturday, and it attracted a large and diverse group of children, parents, grandparents, and various other Dr. Seuss fans of all ages.\u00a0 Co-sponsored by the English Department and Park Road Books, this event featured area educators and literacy advocates reading Dr. Seuss books aloud to children in a marathon fashion for four continuous hours.\u00a0 Also, students from the Children&#8217;s Literature Graduate Organization and Sigma Tau Delta helped children with Dr. Seuss-related craft projects.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1024\" style=\"width: 138px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/03\/suessathon-2017-a-2.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1024\" class=\" wp-image-1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/03\/suessathon-2017-a-2-300x253.jpg?resize=128%2C108&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/03\/suessathon-2017-a-2.jpg?resize=300%2C253&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/03\/suessathon-2017-a-2.jpg?w=449&amp;ssl=1 449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 128px) 100vw, 128px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1024\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CLGO member, Peter Fields reading The Lorax<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>One of the reasons the Seuss-a-Thon is so special to me is that it joins together a wide variety of people in a convivial celebration of literacy.\u00a0 The people who read Dr. Seuss books at this year&#8217;s event included faculty, staff, administrators, graduate students, undergraduate students, and members of the larger Charlotte community.\u00a0 The readers included members of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as the College of Education.\u00a0 Moreover, the event joined together UNC Charlotte&#8217;s English Department and Charlotte\u2019s oldest continuously operating bookstore.\u00a0 The participants in this year&#8217;s Seuss-a-Thon came from many different backgrounds, but everyone came together to promote the cause of literacy and to celebrate the works of Dr. Seuss.<\/p>\n<p>The United States is currently experiencing a time of tremendous divisiveness and discord.\u00a0 As I see it, one of the ways we can bridge our differences is through shared literary experiences.\u00a0 In a small way, the Seuss-a-Thon shows how literature can help bring us together even if it is just for a <span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Saturday<\/span><\/span> afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_7662258712396373457gmail-m_3353396548318276434gmail-m_-1395372058656057778gmail-m_-3048381552484221538gmail-m_577049977353291636gmail-m_5872821698077367735gmail-m_-1186965366729666892gmail-m_7564534190607752086m_480313881962053766m_1628791250906105559gmail-m_5094527907999955090gmail-m_4450450173919394945gmail-m_-2682780935527867369gmail-m_-5608023448311663343gmail-m_-831331756518361873gmail-st\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, serif\"><b>Kudos<\/b> &#8212;
