
{"id":1097,"date":"2017-05-29T13:32:40","date_gmt":"2017-05-29T17:32:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=1097"},"modified":"2017-05-29T13:32:40","modified_gmt":"2017-05-29T17:32:40","slug":"monday-missive-may-29-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2017\/05\/29\/monday-missive-may-29-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; May 29, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1098\" style=\"width: 135px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/05\/aunt-lou.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1098\" class=\"wp-image-1098\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/05\/aunt-lou-225x300.jpg?resize=125%2C166&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/05\/aunt-lou.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/05\/aunt-lou.jpg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aunt Lou has a winning hand!<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>Angie Williams and Her Aunt Lou<\/b> &#8212; Last Friday, a little before <span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">midnight<\/span><\/span>, I received an email from Angie informing me that her Aunt Lou had passed away earlier that evening.\u00a0 She was 92 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>Angie&#8217;s sad news did not come as a surprise, for I knew that her Aunt Lou had been receiving hospice care for about a month. \u00a0 I knew about her Aunt Lou&#8217;s struggles with cancer and dementia.\u00a0 I knew about her Aunt Lou&#8217;s love of poker and television programs about wrestling.\u00a0 I knew about her Aunt Lou&#8217;s fondness for chocolate ice cream.\u00a0 I knew about her Aunt Lou&#8217;s desire to sit on the sofa with their new dog Roxie at her side.\u00a0 But what I did not know was her Aunt Lou&#8217;s legal name, so this morning I asked Angie.\u00a0 Aunt Lou&#8217;s legal name, Angie told me, is Louise Marie Daniels, but as far as I am concerned her real name is Aunt Lou.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Five years ago Angie opened her home to her Aunt Lou.\u00a0 At the time, Angie was already caring for her mother, who was in declining health.\u00a0 However, Angie knew that her Aunt Lou needed help, so Angie stepped up as Angie always does.\u00a0 Angie and her brother Pat took turns looking after their Aunt Lou.\u00a0 They included her in their family activities and celebrations. They played poker with her.\u00a0 They listened to her stories about growing up in the coal-mining country of West Virginia.\u00a0 Angie wrote about her Aunt Lou&#8217;s colorful stories in a recent blog post.\u00a0 Here is the link to this posting:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/angie-williams\/blog\/2017\/05\/16\/tell-me-about-the-good-ole-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/angie-williams\/blog\/2017\/05\/16\/tell-me-about-the-good-ole-days\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Angie often refers to herself as a caregiver when she talks about her relationship with her Aunt Lou, but I don&#8217;t think that this word fully captures this side of Angie.\u00a0 It is true that Angie provided her Aunt Lou with the care that she needed, but she also provided her with acceptance, love, and a place to call home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>Memorial Day<\/b> &#8212;
