
{"id":1190,"date":"2017-08-21T10:26:51","date_gmt":"2017-08-21T14:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=1190"},"modified":"2017-08-21T10:32:00","modified_gmt":"2017-08-21T14:32:00","slug":"monday-missive-august-21-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2017\/08\/21\/monday-missive-august-21-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; August 21, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1193\" style=\"width: 248px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/08\/Wall-of-fame.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1193\" class=\"wp-image-1193 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/08\/Wall-of-fame-300x224.jpg?resize=238%2C178&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/08\/Wall-of-fame.jpg?resize=300%2C224&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/08\/Wall-of-fame.jpg?w=592&amp;ssl=1 592w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Wall of Fame&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Excellence in Teaching<\/b>\u00a0&#8212; Whenever I talk about the English Department to candidates or other people who are interested in our department, I mention that our faculty members take teaching very seriously.\u00a0 We do not all teach in the same way, but we are all committed to sharing our specialized knowledge and insights with our students.\u00a0 We all do our best to cultivate our students&#8217; skills as readers, writers, and critical thinkers.\u00a0 I believe that we always strive for teaching excellence, so I take great satisfaction when the larger university recognizes our excellent teaching.\u00a0 Over the years, such recognition has come our way on many occasions.\u00a0 For evidence, one simply needs to look at the many plaques and certificates related to teaching on display on the English Department&#8217;s Wall of Fame.\u00a0 This year, the larger university is again recognizing the excellent teaching that takes place in our department.<\/p>\n<p>The English Department is the recipient of the 2016-2017 Provost&#8217;s Award for Excellence in Teaching.\u00a0 According to the official description of this award, &#8220;The Provost&#8217;s Award for Excellence in Teaching is granted to an academic department, program, or unit in recognition of the collective responsibility of faculty members for maintaining high-quality teaching.\u00a0 The award is intended to recognize documented efforts that improve student learning and outcomes.&#8221;\u00a0 The English Department also received this award in 1995-1996, making our department one of only three departments to receive this award twice.<\/p>\n<p>Also this semester, Kirk Melnikoff is being honored as a finalist for the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence.\u00a0 The award ceremony will take place on\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">September 8, 2017<\/span><\/span>, at which point we will learn if Kirk won this award.\u00a0 However, being named a finalist for this award is itself an honor.\u00a0 Kirk joins a long list of English faculty members who are recipients or finalists for this award.
