
{"id":1221,"date":"2017-09-18T14:40:44","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T18:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=1221"},"modified":"2017-09-18T14:56:19","modified_gmt":"2017-09-18T18:56:19","slug":"monday-missive-september-18-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2017\/09\/18\/monday-missive-september-18-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; September 18, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><b>3 Under 30<\/b>\u00a0&#8212; The website Charlotte Agenda recently ran an article titled &#8220;30 Under 30&#8221;\u00a0 in which they featured thirty young people who are making a difference in the Charlotte community.\u00a0\u00a0<i>Inside UNC Charlotte\u00a0<\/i>picked up this story and noted that of the people featured in the article six graduated from UNC Charlotte, including one who majored in English.\u00a0 For more information, please click on the following link:\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/inside.uncc.edu\/news-features\/2017-09-11\/alums-make-%E2%80%9930-under-30%E2%80%99-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/inside.uncc.edu\/news-features\/2017-09-11\/alums-make-%E2%80%9930-under-30%E2%80%99-list<\/a>\u00a0In response to this article, I decided to celebrate the accomplishments of three young people who recently received degrees from our English Department.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/09\/Ashley-Bookout.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1222 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/09\/Ashley-Bookout-300x244.jpg?resize=156%2C127&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"156\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/09\/Ashley-Bookout.jpg?resize=300%2C244&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/09\/Ashley-Bookout.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 156px) 100vw, 156px\" \/><\/a>Ashley Pittman Bookout<\/b>\u00a0is the English major who is included in Charlotte Agenda&#8217;s &#8220;30 Under 30.&#8221; \u00a0 Ashley graduated in 2011 after which she worked in corporate Charlotte for a few years.\u00a0 However, Ashley&#8217;s long-time love of flowers and flower arranging, combined with her entrepreneurial spirit, led her to found Bookout Blooms in the fall of 2015.\u00a0 Located in Atherton Market in the Southend, Bookout Blooms is already recognized as one of Charlotte&#8217;s premier florists.\u00a0 According to Paul Redd (another one of our former students),\u00a0&#8220;This is the best florist in Charlotte.\u00a0Hands down! Ashley has done the flowers for my daughter&#8217;s celebrations, my grandmother&#8217;s funeral, and everything\u00a0in between.<span class=\"m_-215862178811708820gmail-text_exposed_show\">\u00a0I will continue to support these fine people. ELC Peer mentors Bethany Hyder and MaKalea Bjoin have designed something a little different this year, giving it an\u00a0<i>Alice in Wonderland\u00a0<\/i>theme as well as making it a bit more interactive. In addition to seeing pictures and learning about the individual members, you can also leave them little notes of encouragement. Please stop by and learn a bit more about the newest members of our department. Let&#8217;s make them feel like a part of our department.
