One week. \u00a0One community<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">\u2014 The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is sponsoring a week-long, \u00a0community-wide reading of Ray Bradbury&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Fahrenheit 451. \u00a0<\/i>This project will take place from April 13-19, and it involves many related events at the various library branches and other places in the community. \u00a0I am scheduled to lead a book discussion at the the Beatties Ford Road Branch of the library on April 17 from 6:00-7:30. \u00a0For more information about these various events, please click on the following link: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmlibrary.org\/onebook\">www.cmlibrary.org\/onebook<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">Fahrenheit 451\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">came out in 1953, the height of the McCarthy era, and the book&#8217;s anti-censorship theme had direct connections to the wave of censorship that was sweeping America at the time. However, the problem of censorship is not, unfortunately, a relic of days gone by. \u00a0Just last month In our neighboring state of South Carolina, the state&#8217;s legislators voted to cut state funding to the University of South Carolina Upstate and to the College of Charleston to punish these institutions of higher learning for assigning LGBT books. \u00a0The two books these legislators are attacking are\u00a0<i>Out Loud: \u00a0The Best of Rainbow Reading\u00a0<\/i>and Alison Bechdel&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Fun Home.<\/i>\u00a0As Ray Bradbury makes so clear in\u00a0<i>Fahrenheit 451,\u00a0<\/i>the suppression of books is really about the suppression of ideas and\u00a0ultimately\u00a0the suppression of people. \u00a0Bradbury&#8217;s classic is 60 years old, but the theme of his book is still very relevant to our world and our time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">Kudos<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">\u2014 As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to \u00a0share news about recent accomplishments by members of our department. \u00a0Here is the latest news:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">Liz Miller<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">\u00a0recently attended the annual conference of the American Association of Applied Linguistics in Portland, Oregon. She co-organized a colloquium on \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: #333333\">Socially Mediated Agency and Second Language Learning: Theory, Analysis, Pedagogy\u201d which included scholars from Finland, Sweden, France, Spain, Canada and the US. She also presented a paper titled \u201cSocial Sustainability: Is there a Definition in the House?\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0This past weekend she presented a poster titled &#8220;Starting the Conversation: Social Sustainability as Discursive Object&#8221; at the second annual conference of the Integrated Network for Social Sustainability, hosted at the Center City building in Charlotte. She also spoke on the same topic to the full assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"color: black\">Becky Roeder<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black\">\u00a0and Matt Hunt Gardner (U Toronto) recently presented a paper titled &#8220;A Tale of Two Phonologies: English in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia&#8221; at the Southeastern Conference on Linguistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">Erika Romero<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">, one of our M.A.\u00a0Students,\u00a0has been accepted into the Ph.D. program at Illinois State University, with full funding. \u00a0She plans to study children&#8217;s literature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">Ralf Thiede<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">\u00a0recently presented a paper titled \u00a0&#8220;Grammar for Writing: Discovering the Language of Power and the Power of Language&#8221; at the Southeastern Conference on Linguistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">Upcoming Events and Deadlines<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">\u2014\u00a0Here is a date to keep in mind:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\"><strong>April 11<\/strong> \u2014 The EGSA Professional Day will take place throughout the afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">Quirky Quiz Question<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';color: black\">\u00a0\u2014 The central character in\u00a0<i>Fahrenheit 451\u00a0<\/i>is Guy Montag. \u00a0What is Guy&#8217;s job?<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One Book.
