
{"id":1327,"date":"2017-12-18T12:10:13","date_gmt":"2017-12-18T17:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=1327"},"modified":"2017-12-18T12:10:13","modified_gmt":"2017-12-18T17:10:13","slug":"monday-missive-december-18-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2017\/12\/18\/monday-missive-december-18-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; December 18, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><b><span class=\"m_-7715713213588560712gmail-m_-6293658423929498988m_8582830180501824283m_4929493525012998719gmail-il\"><span class=\"m_-7715713213588560712gmail-il\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/12\/Commencement-December-2017.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1331\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/12\/Commencement-December-2017-225x300.jpeg?resize=149%2C199\" alt=\"\" width=\"149\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a>Commencement<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"m_-7715713213588560712gmail-il\">Report<\/span><\/b>\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0Last Saturday the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences held its winter\u00a0<span class=\"m_-7715713213588560712gmail-m_-6293658423929498988m_8582830180501824283m_4929493525012998719gmail-il\"><span class=\"m_-7715713213588560712gmail-il\">commencement<\/span><\/span>\u00a0ceremony, and for 86 of our students, this ceremony marked their transition from current students to graduates.\u00a0 A total of 12 of our graduate students are listed in the\u00a0<span class=\"m_-7715713213588560712gmail-m_-6293658423929498988m_8582830180501824283m_4929493525012998719gmail-il\"><span class=\"m_-7715713213588560712gmail-il\">commencement<\/span><\/span>\u00a0program, and 74 undergraduate students are listed.<\/div>\n<div class=\"m_-7715713213588560712gmail-MsoNormal\">\n<p>I was especially impressed with how many of our BA students fall under the heading of &#8220;Graduation with Distinction.&#8221; \u00a0Of the 74 students, 11 earned the distinction of Cum Laude (GPA between 3.4-3.7), 4 earned the distinction of Magna Cum Laude (GPA between 3.7-3.9), and 6 earned the distinction of Summa Cum Laude (GPA between 3.9-4.0).\u00a0 This total comes to 21\u00a0students. I am very proud of all of our graduating students, but I want to mention by name the 6 students who earned the distinction of Summa Cum Laude.\u00a0 Their names are Brittney Elder, Samantha Ashley Holt, Jordan Thomas Kearney, Shelby Lauren LeClair, Alicia Nicole Mullis, and Brianna Nicole Thurman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"m_-7715713213588560712gmail-MsoNormal\">\n<p><b>English Martin Scholars<\/b>\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0The first two Martin Scholars to graduate from UNC Charlotte are English majors Chelsea Moore and Nephdarlie Saint Cyr. Both earned Honors in English. Their achievements were celebrated December 13th at a dinner at Macaroni Grill hosted by the Honors College and made possible through the generosity of the Martin family.\u00a0 Pictured with them are English honors director Kirk Melnikoff and two English faculty who supported them, Aaron Toscano and Balaka Basu.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<p>Martin Scholars enjoy funding up to the full cost of attendance at UNC Charlotte.\u00a0 As merit scholarship recipients, they are supported by a faculty fellow, Jeffrey Leak, and the Honors College Associate Director for Scholar Advising, Karen James.
