
{"id":141,"date":"2014-04-28T17:14:25","date_gmt":"2014-04-28T17:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=141"},"modified":"2014-08-26T16:55:40","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T16:55:40","slug":"monday-missive-april-28-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2014\/04\/28\/monday-missive-april-28-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; April 28, 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><b>Reflections on a Party<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 For me, one of the pleasures of hosting the department spring party yesterday was seeing all of the young children using the playground setup in our backyard. \u00a0When our son was little, we hired a carpenter to build a custom play structure complete with a curvy yellow slide. \u00a0Our son and his friends spent many hours playing on this structure, but then he grew up and the play set went for years without being used. \u00a0 However, now that our backyard has become the site for our department parties, the play set in coming back to life. \u00a0I like knowing that the English Department is producing a new generation of young children, full of energy and a zeal for play. \u00a0It makes me feel hopeful for the future.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><b>Kudos<\/b>\u2014 As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to \u00a0share news about recent accomplishments by members of our department. \u00a0Here is the latest news:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Traci Cruey<\/b>, one of our graduate students, has been accepted into a Ph.D. program at Middle Tennessee State University with full funding where she plans to study children&#8217;s literature.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Toynia Edmonds<\/b>, one of our undergraduate students, took first place in English for a paper she presented last week at the Undergraduate Research\u00a0Conference. She wrote her paper on the mother-daughter voice in Thylias Moss&#8217;\u00a0<i>Slave Moth.\u00a0<\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Sarah Minslow\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\">published an article\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\">titled &#8220;Considering the Common Core: \u00a0Literary Fiction Is the\u00a0Heart of the Matter&#8221; in the debut issue of\u00a0<i>RISE: \u00a0A Children&#8217;s Literacy Journal.<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Anita Moss<\/b>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\">published an article\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\">titled &#8220;Remembering E. L.
