Partners and Programs<\/b>\u00a0— In the history of our English Department, this April stands out as an exceptional month for collaborative programs involving our department and our various university and community partners.\u00a0 These partners include the J. Murrey Atkins Library, UNC Charlotte Center City, UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, and the North Carolina Humanities Council.\u00a0 Between now and the end of the month, the English Department will participate in five collaborative programs, all of which are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>The first of these programs is the Julian D. Mason Talk on Rare Books, which is scheduled for\u00a0Tuesday, April 10, at 4:00 p.m.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the Halton Reading Room in the Atkins Library.\u00a0 Co-sponsored by the Atkins Library Special Collections and University Archives and our chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, this event will feature a presentation by Dr. Leslie Howsam.\u00a0 The title of her talk is “Book History:\u00a0 A Niche for Nerds, or Essential Knowledge?” \u00a0 Dr. Howsam is a well-known scholar in the field of book history and has published numerous works in this field, including\u00a0The Cambridge Companion to the History of the Book\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0Old Books & New Histories:\u00a0 An Orientation to Studies in Book and Print Culture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>For more information about this event, please click on the following link:\u00a0\u00a0http:\/\/library.uncc.edu\/HowsamTalk<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Our next collaborative program is the Center City Literary Festival, which will take place on\u00a0Saturday,\u00a0 April 14<\/span><\/span>, at UNC Charlotte Center City,\u00a0320 E. 9th Street<\/a>.\u00a0 Co-sponsored by the English Department and UNC Charlotte Center City, this festival is divided into two parts.\u00a0 The day-time part is intended for children and their families and will run from\u00a010:00 a.m.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to 1:00 p.m.\u00a0 The evening part is intended for adults and will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.\u00a0 For more information on this event, please click on the following link:\u00a0\u00a0https:\/\/centercitylitfest.uncc.edu\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>On the same day that the Center City Literary Festival will take place,\u00a0the English Department and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library are co-sponsoring a screening of\u00a0The Reivers<\/i>\u00a0at the Francis Auditorium in the Main Library (310 N. Tryon Street<\/a>).\u00a0 This screening will take place on Saturday, April 14, at 2:00 p.m.\u00a0 This event is supported by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council and is tied to a larger program titled “The Child in Southern Literature and Film.”\u00a0 For more information about this event, please click on the following link:\u00a0\u00a0https:\/\/exchange.uncc.edu\/event\/film-the-reivers\/<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Our fourth collaborative program is tied to an exhibition at the Atkins Library of original artwork by Romare Bearden from\u00a0Li’l Dan, the Drummer Boy:\u00a0 A Civil War Story,\u00a0<\/i>the only picture book ever created by Bearden.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>Janaka Lewis and I will give presentations on\u00a0Li’l Dan, the Drummer Boy\u00a0<\/i>on\u00a0Monday, April 16, at 4:00 p.m.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the Halton Reading Room in the Atkins Library. \u00a0 Janaka’s presentation is titled\u00a0 “Children’s Narratives of Freedom:\u00a0 Romare Bearden’s\u00a0Li’l Dan the Drummer Boy.”<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0 My presentation is titled\u00a0 “Romare Bearden’s Artistic Influences as Reflected in\u00a0Li’l Dan, the Drummer Boy.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>For more information about this exhibit, please click on the following link:\u00a0\u00a0https:\/\/library.uncc.edu\/Bearden<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>Our fifth collaborative program is tied to Earth Day and is co-sponsored by the English Department and UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens.\u00a0 Called “Gardens and Verses:\u00a0 An Earth Day Celebration,” this event will take place on\u00a0Thursday, April 19<\/span><\/span>, from\u00a011:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens.\u00a0 The organizers of this event are Jen Munroe and Matt Rowney from the English Department and Jeff Gilman, the Director of the Botanical Gardens.\u00a0 This event will feature poetry readings, opportunities to write about nature, a scavenger hunt, and free pizza while it lasts.\u00a0 For more information about this event, please click on the following link:\u00a0\u00a0https:\/\/inside.uncc.edu\/news-features\/2018-04-02\/earth-day-botanical-gardens<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
