
{"id":144,"date":"2014-05-05T22:53:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-05T22:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=144"},"modified":"2014-08-26T16:55:40","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T16:55:40","slug":"monday-missive-may-5-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2014\/05\/05\/monday-missive-may-5-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; May 5, 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two long-time friends of the English Department are about to retire. \u00a0Jo Ann Fernald (the Director of the Office of Disability Services) and Pamela King (the Director of Sponsored Research for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) are both retiring at the end of this academic year. \u00a0Like many of you, I have had extensive contact with both of these colleagues, and I have long been impressed with their professionalism and dedication. \u00a0 Over the years, Jo Ann has helped me better serve my students who have various disabilities, and I know that she and her staff have helped countless students succeed in their studies at UNC Charlotte. \u00a0 My connections with Pam King go back to the day she interviewed for her current position. \u00a0I was working in the Dean&#8217;s office at the time, and I remember thinking that she would be a perfect person for the position. \u00a0In her ten years at UNC Charlotte, Pam has not only provided leadership and expertise in the area of sponsored research, but she has also played a major role in cultivating the College&#8217;s support for research. \u00a0I&#8217;ve long been impressed with her willingness to help all faculty members with their grant proposals even if their grants were for comparatively small amounts of money. \u00a0Both Jo Ann and Pam are looking forward to their new adventures, and I know that we all wish them well, but they should also know that they will be missed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"color: black\">Graduate Program News<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black\"> \u2014 Pilar Blitvich and I recently talked about encouraging developments in our graduate program, and we thought we should share some of this news the department. \u00a0In addition to our regular seven TAships, tied to the WRC\/FYWP, this year we were able to secure two exceptional student awards, which waive the student\u2019s first-year tuition costs, and two New Time Limited Assistantship funds ($10,000 each). Furthermore, our three prospect courses (taught by Jen, Kirk, and Ralf) also generated\u00a0Taships. \u00a0Moreover, we were able to offer a Dean\u2019s Graduate Scholar Award to an incoming English Education student. \u00a0We are also very pleased to report that Robin\u00a0Kello\u00a0was awarded the Russell Robinson Scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"color: black\">Kudos<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black\">\u2014 As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to \u00a0share news about recent accomplishments by members of our department. \u00a0Here is the latest news:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"color: black;background: white\">Pilar Blitvich<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black;background: white\">\u00a0recently published a co-authored article titled\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black\">\u00a0\u201cDespierten, Latinos\u201d (Wake up, Latinos): Latino Identity, US politics, and YouTube\u201d in\u00a0<i>Journal of Language and Politics. \u00a0<\/i>She has also had a number of other articles and book chapters recently accepted for publication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"color: black\">Kaitlyn Chapman<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black\">, an undergraduate student in Jen Munroe&#8217;s interdisciplinary honors course on food systems and sustainability, won first place for the Honors College for her poster at the recent Undergraduate Research Conference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"color: black\">Nicholas DeArmas<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black\">, one of our graduate\u00a0students,\u00a0has been accepted into the Ph.D. program in rhetoric and composition at the University of Central Florida with full funding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"color: black\">Alan Rauch<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black\"> recently learned that\u00a0<i>Scientific Americans\u00a0<span style=\"background: white\">: The Making of Popular Science and Evolution in Early-twentieth-century U.S. Literature and Culture\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"background: white\">by John Bruni was just published in the series that Alan edits (with Martin Willis) \u00a0for University of Wales Press (distributed in the US by University of Chicago Press) called Intersections in Literature and Science. \u00a0It is the first book in the series. \u00a0Also, \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background: #FFFEFE\">Alan was the sole guest on Charlotte Talks on April 25th (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wfae.org\/post\/alan-rauch\"><span style=\"color: purple\">http:\/\/wfae.org\/post\/alan-rauch<\/span><\/a>). \u00a0He discussed his book\u00a0<i>Dolphin<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"color: black\">Upcoming Events and Deadlines<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black\">\u2014\u00a0Here are some dates to keep in mind:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><strong>May 10<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0The CLAS Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0beginning at 10:00 a.m.\u00a0 Please forward the letter to all EPA and SPA staff members in your departments.April 30 \u2014 The English Department meeting will take place in the Library (Atkins Room 130) from 11:00-12:30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><strong>May 12<\/strong> \u2014 Final grades for the Spring 2014 semester must be submitted by Monday, May 12th at noon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><span style=\"color: black\">Quirky Quiz Question<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: black\">\u00a0\u2014 Alan&#8217;s news about being a recent guest on the radio show titled Charlotte Talks underscores for me the importance of this show in terms of Charlotte&#8217;s cultural scene. \u00a0Who is the host of this show?
