
{"id":1520,"date":"2018-07-23T08:25:42","date_gmt":"2018-07-23T12:25:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=1520"},"modified":"2018-07-23T08:25:42","modified_gmt":"2018-07-23T12:25:42","slug":"monday-missive-july-23-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2018\/07\/23\/monday-missive-july-23-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; July 23, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2018\/07\/The-Love-of-Baseball.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1523\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2018\/07\/The-Love-of-Baseball.jpg?resize=184%2C184\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>For the Love of Baseball<\/b>\u00a0&#8212; Chris Arvidson, one of our part-time faculty members, has a passion for the game of baseball.\u00a0 Not only has she co-edited a collection titled\u00a0<i>The Love of Baseball:\u00a0 Essays by Lifelong Fans\u00a0<\/i>(2017)<i>,\u00a0<\/i>but she has also helped organize two upcoming baseball-related events.\u00a0 These events will take place on the weekend of\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">August 4 and 5<\/span><\/span>and involve the participation of Park Road Books and the Charlotte Knights.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<span class=\"m_3902746362532352642gmail-aBn\"><span class=\"m_3902746362532352642gmail-aQJ\">Saturday, August 4<\/span><\/span>, Park Road Books is hosting a reading\/signing featuring Chris&#8217;s book.\u00a0 The event will begin at\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">2:00 p.m.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and will feature several people associated with UNC Charlotte, including Chris, Henry Doss, Stephen Ward, Nancy Gutierrez, Rachel Bratcher Laxton, and Ellyn Ritterskamp.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"m_3902746362532352642gmail-aBn\"><span class=\"m_3902746362532352642gmail-aQJ\">On Sunday<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">August 5<\/span><\/span>, the Charlotte Knights is sponsoring Women in Baseball Day at BB&amp;T Park. As part of this event, Chis and some of the contributors to her book will be on hand to sign books. Chris informed me that the Charlotte Knights are offering a special ticket offer. She wrote, &#8220;For twenty bucks you get a really great seat and a book.&#8221; Game time is\u00a0<span class=\"m_3902746362532352642gmail-aBn\"><span class=\"m_3902746362532352642gmail-aQJ\"><span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">5:05<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>with the Durham Bulls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Chris&#8217;s interest in baseball is also reflected in her teaching.\u00a0 For example, this coming fall semester, she is teaching a special topics course called &#8220;Baseball in Film.&#8221;\u00a0 In her official description of this class, she writes, &#8220;Students will examine, analyze, and write about the ways baseball in film has served as a cultural barometer and reflection of American life.&#8221; In addition to covering a number of classic baseball films, she will have her students read the literature that has often inspired these films.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In the world of academia, sports are often seen as extracurricular activities, which means that they exist &#8220;outside the regular curriculum.&#8221;\u00a0 However, at least in our English Department, baseball is finding a place within the the work of the department.\u00a0 If one were to think of the English Department as a ballpark, the story of Chris&#8217;s baseball-related activities is an inside-the-ballpark story.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Kudos<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u2014\u00a0As you know, I like to use my\u00a0Missives\u00a0to share news about recent accomplishments by members of the English Department.\u00a0 Here is the latest news:<\/p>\n<p><b>Boyd Davis<\/b>\u00a0recently learned that a grant she wrote for a pilot study titled &#8220;Tablet-Based Program to Address Pain and Fatigue in Older Adults&#8221; has been approved.\u00a0 Boyd has also just published reviews of two books that deal with patient care.<\/p>\n<p><b>Maya Socolovsky\u00a0<\/b>recently presented a paper titled\u00a0&#8220;Surveillance and Perspective: Depictions of Nations and Borders in Jos\u00e9 Manuel Mateo&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Migrant<\/i>&#8221;
