
{"id":1654,"date":"2018-12-04T12:01:32","date_gmt":"2018-12-04T17:01:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=1654"},"modified":"2018-12-04T12:01:32","modified_gmt":"2018-12-04T17:01:32","slug":"monday-missive-december-3-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2018\/12\/04\/monday-missive-december-3-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; December 3, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2018\/12\/Lewis-Carroll.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1661\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2018\/12\/Lewis-Carroll-263x300.jpg?resize=157%2C180\" alt=\"\" width=\"157\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Off We Go to Oxford University<\/b>\u00a0&#8212; Nearly every week I write about our English Department in my Monday Missives, but I have not yet given a conference presentation about our department.\u00a0 That&#8217;s about to change this week.\u00a0 I am heading off to Oxford University where I will deliver a presentation at the Oxford Education Research Symposium on Wednesday.\u00a0 The rather grandiose title of my presentation is &#8220;The Future of the Humanities in Post-Secondary Education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My presentation is in response to the recent surge of articles proclaiming the demise of humanities departments at universities.\u00a0\u00a0<i>The Atlantic<\/i>, for example, recently published an article titled &#8220;The Humanities Are in Crisis&#8221; in which the author, Benjamin Schmidt, argues that academia is currently experiencing a tectonic shift involving the STEM disciplines supplanting the humanities.\u00a0 While I do not question Schmidt&#8217;s data, I do question the notion that the humanities and the STEM disciplines are necessarily in a competitive relationship.\u00a0 As I see it, a more constructive framework is to think of the humanities and the STEM disciplines as overlapping circles on a Venn diagram.<\/p>\n<p>During my presentation, I will discuss several examples of how faculty in our English Department incorporate insights from the sciences in their teaching and research.\u00a0 Drawing on these examples, I will argue that the humanities and the STEM disciplines can have a complementary relationship.\u00a0 Using the success of our own English Department as a case in point, I will suggest that humanities departments can still prosper in contemporary academia so long as they do not isolate themselves in academic silos.<\/p>\n<p>I think it is fitting that I will be giving this presentation at Oxford University, for it was at Oxford that Lewis Carroll, a mathematics professor, wrote\u00a0<i>Alice&#8217;s Adventures in Wonderland,\u00a0<\/i>one of the great works of British children&#8217;s literature.\u00a0 The term &#8220;STEM disciplines&#8221; had not yet been coined when Carroll was teaching at Oxford University, but today he would be associated with the STEM disciplines. \u00a0 Since Carroll showed that it is possible to bridge the STEM disciplines and the humanities, I think it should be possible for the rest of us to follow suit.\u00a0 For those naysayers who think such bridging is impossible in contemporary academia, I will close with a quotation from\u00a0<i>Alice&#8217;s Adventures in Wonderland<\/i>: &#8220;Why, sometimes I&#8217;ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Kudos<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u2014 As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to share news about recent accomplishments by members of the English Department.\u00a0 Here is the latest news:<\/p>\n<p><b>Meghan Barnes<\/b>\u00a0recently presented the following two papers at the Literacy Research Association: \u00a0&#8220;<span id=\"m_812718079576501006m_2576593840943865990m_5485296274795636515m_-324723144925287740m_-327542409399136998m_8270091882329000543gmail-m_-4980206347645978026gmail-m_-6403775175916344131gmail-docs-internal-guid-2a456b64-7fff-3561-4fbb-462c8471a6bb\">Mediating the Two-Worlds Pitfall through Critical, Project-Based Clinical Experiences&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0and &#8220;<span id=\"m_812718079576501006m_2576593840943865990m_5485296274795636515m_-324723144925287740m_-327542409399136998m_8270091882329000543gmail-m_-4980206347645978026gmail-m_-6403775175916344131gmail-docs-internal-guid-2a456b64-7fff-3561-4fbb-462c8471a6bb\">Absent Dialogue: Challenges of Building Reciprocity through Community Engagement in Teacher Education<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Liz Miller<\/b>\u00a0is the lead guest editor of a recently published special issue in the journal\u00a0<i>System<\/i>. The issue is titled &#8220;Interdisciplinarity in Language Teacher Agency: Theoretical and Analytical Explorations&#8221;\u00a0 and includes nine articles, one of which is co-authored by Liz.
