
{"id":1687,"date":"2018-12-26T11:15:20","date_gmt":"2018-12-26T16:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=1687"},"modified":"2018-12-26T11:15:20","modified_gmt":"2018-12-26T16:15:20","slug":"monday-missive-december-24-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2018\/12\/26\/monday-missive-december-24-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; December 24, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2018\/12\/Man-who-invented-Christmas-1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1690\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2018\/12\/Man-who-invented-Christmas-1-203x300.jpg?resize=152%2C226\" alt=\"\" width=\"152\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Dickens and the Creation of\u00a0<\/b><i><b>A Christmas Carol<\/b>\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0<\/i>While I was on the plane flying back from a conference at Oxford University earlier this month, I watched a film that was perfectly suited for the season.\u00a0 Titled\u00a0<i>The Man Who Invented Christmas,\u00a0<\/i>this 2017 film tells the story of how Charles Dickens came to write\u00a0<i>A Christmas Carol.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>The film stars Dan Stevens as Dickens and Christopher Plummer as Ebenezer Scrooge.<\/p>\n<p>In the film, Dickens moves among three overlapping worlds.\u00a0 Part of the film deals with his day-to-day life as an author, which involves interactions with family members, friends, and business associates.\u00a0 Another part of the film dramatizes his interior world, which is where he interacts with his fictional characters, especially Scrooge.\u00a0 A third part deals with his stressful childhood, which is at the root of an ongoing tension between Dickens and his father. The director, Bharat Nalluri, brings these three worlds together, culminating in the publication of\u00a0<i>A Christmas Carol<\/i>\u00a0on December 19, 1843.<\/p>\n<p>For me, this film brought up memories from my own childhood.\u00a0 My father was a great admirer of Dickens, and he often read Dickens&#8217;s books aloud to my brother, sister, and me during the evenings after we finished our homework.\u00a0 For many years, he read\u00a0<i>A Christmas Carol\u00a0<\/i>to us on Christmas Eve.\u00a0 While I was watching\u00a0<i>The Man Who Invented Christmas,\u00a0<\/i>I kept flashing back to my treasured memories of sitting on the couch in our living room, listening to the magic combination of Dickens&#8217;s words and my father&#8217;s voice.\u00a0 The film ends with Dickens&#8217;s reconciliation with his father, and this ending made me miss my father. \u00a0 As the credits started to roll, I silently thanked my lucky stars that<i>\u00a0<\/i>Dickens wrote\u00a0<i>A Christmas Carol<\/i>\u00a0and that my Jewish father introduced to me to this classic story.<\/p>\n<p>I wish you all the best for the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p><b>Kudos<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0\u2014 As you know, I like to use my\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Monday<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Missives<\/span>\u00a0to share news about recent accomplishments by members of the English Department.\u00a0 Here is the latest news:<\/p>\n<p><b>Alan Rauch\u00a0<\/b>recently received a Helm Fellowship from the Lilly Library for a research project titled &#8220;Women, Science, and Translation in the Nineteenth Century.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><b>Ralf Thiede<\/b>\u00a0just received a contract from Routledge for a book tentatively titled\u00a0<i>Language, Mind, and Power<\/i>:<i>\u00a0 Why We Need Linguistic Equality.<\/i>\u00a0 Dan Boisvert is the co-author of this book.<\/p>\n<p><b>Upcoming Events and Meetings<\/b>\u00a0&#8212; Here is a list of upcoming events and deadlines:<\/p>\n<p>January 9 &#8212; First day of classes for the Spring 2019 semester.<\/p>\n<p>January 16 &#8212; Last day for students to add or drop a course with no grade.<\/p>\n<p>January 29 &#8212; The Personally Speaking presentation featuring Janaka Bowman Lewis will take place on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at UNC Charlotte Center City.\u00a0 Janaka&#8217;s presentation on her book\u00a0<i>Freedom Narratives of African American Women<\/i>\u00a0will begin at 6:30 p.m.\u00a0 A book signing and reception will follow her presentation.
