
{"id":1709,"date":"2019-01-22T09:03:26","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T14:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=1709"},"modified":"2019-01-22T09:03:26","modified_gmt":"2019-01-22T14:03:26","slug":"monday-missive-january-21-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2019\/01\/22\/monday-missive-january-21-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; January 21, 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2019\/01\/Janaka-Lewis-Freedom-Narratives.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1712\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2019\/01\/Janaka-Lewis-Freedom-Narratives-200x300.jpg?resize=169%2C254\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Honoring the Foremothers of the Civil Rights Movement<\/b>\u00a0&#8212; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. played a pivotal role in America&#8217;s civil rights movement beginning in 1955, when he led the Montgomery bus boycott, and continuing until his death in 1968.\u00a0 However, King was not a lone voice in the wilderness.\u00a0 He was part of a larger movement that had its origins in the nineteenth century. \u00a0 Today, as we honor King&#8217;s many contributions to the civil rights movement, I think that we should also honor the people who helped give birth to this movement, many of whom were African American women.<\/p>\n<p>In her book titled\u00a0<i>Freedom Narratives of African American Women:\u00a0 A Study of 19th Century Writings,\u00a0<\/i>Janaka Lewis examines the writings of several African American women who wrote about the meaning and importance of freedom.\u00a0 The writers that Janaka covers in her book include Harriet Jacobs, Ellen Craft, Charlotte Forten, Elizabeth Keckley, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Anna Julia Cooper, and Lucy Craft Laney.\u00a0 As Janaka points out in her book, these women writers actively participated the national discourse about the changing definitions of freedom and citizenship.\u00a0 In the process, these women helped set the stage for the rise of the civil rights movement of the mid-twentieth century.<\/p>\n<p>Janaka will talk about\u00a0<i>Freedom Narratives of African American Women<\/i>\u00a0later this month as part of the Personally Speaking Series.\u00a0 Her presentation will take place on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at UNC Charlotte Center City.\u00a0 The presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.\u00a0 A book signing and reception will follow her presentation.
