
{"id":1938,"date":"2019-08-12T11:19:31","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T15:19:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=1938"},"modified":"2019-08-12T11:19:31","modified_gmt":"2019-08-12T15:19:31","slug":"monday-missive-august-12-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2019\/08\/12\/monday-missive-august-12-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; August 12, 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2019\/08\/Center-City-and-city.jpg?resize=356%2C195&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1939\" width=\"356\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2019\/08\/Center-City-and-city.jpg?w=548&amp;ssl=1 548w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2019\/08\/Center-City-and-city.jpg?resize=300%2C164&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 356px) 100vw, 356px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Urban Connections<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; Our university has long identified itself as an urban institution.\u00a0 Our university is named after the city of Charlotte.\u00a0 Our university&#8217;s tag line is &#8220;North Carolina&#8217;s urban research university.&#8221;\u00a0 Our university has a large facility called UNC Charlotte Center City.\u00a0 This urban focus is also reflected in our teaching and service work.\u00a0 I was reminded of our urban emphasis during a recent conversation I had with Janaka Lewis about the seminar for teachers that she is leading for the Charlotte Teachers Institute (CTI) this fall.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Titled &#8220;Childhood and the City Space in Literature,&#8221; Janaka&#8217;s seminar is all about growing up in urban environments.\u00a0 In her official description of her seminar, Janaka writes, &#8220;This seminar will examine representations of childhood in city settings, with specific focus on underrepresented populations and themes that feature them in literature.&#8221;\u00a0 Among the books that she will be covering are Octavia Butler&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Parable of the Sower,\u00a0<\/em>Rita Williams-Garcia&#8217;s\u00a0<em>One Crazy Summer,<\/em>Sandra Cisneros&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The House on Mango Street,\u00a0<\/em>and Angie Thomas&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Hate U Give.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to having the participants study works of literature, Janaka also plans for them to incorporate the city of Charlotte in their examination of urban childhoods.\u00a0 As she states in her description of the seminar, &#8220;Participants will also draw upon Charlotte as a cityscape by examining how local art, science, and history museums represent or could connect to underrepresented experiences of children in Charlotte.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Janaka&#8217;s CTI seminar is but one of numerous examples of community engagement activities performed by members of our English Department.\u00a0 For many members of our department, the city of Charlotte is not just the location of our university;\u00a0 it&#8217;s also the urban nexus where our teaching and our commitment to community service converge.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kudos<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u2014 As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to share news about recent accomplishments by members of the English Department.\u00a0 Here is the latest news:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Allison Hutchcraft<\/strong>\u00a0published a poem titled \u201cSteller and the Sea Cow\u201d in\u00a0<em>The Southern Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Matt Rowney\u00a0<\/strong>recently presented a pre-conference workshop titled &#8220;Romanticism Now&#8221; and a conference paper titled &#8220;&#8216;Strange look&#8217;d it there!&#8217;: Palms, the Explosion of the Palm Oil Industry, and the Poetry of Felicia Hemans&#8221; at the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism Conference in Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Upcoming Events and Deadlines<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Here is information about upcoming events and deadlines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>August 12\u2014 Final grades for the second summer session courses are\u00a0due by noon on Monday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>August 15\u2014 The University Convocation will take place on Thursday, August 15, at 9:30 a.m. in McKnight Hall.  The Convocation will be preceded by a reception beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Lucas Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>August 20\u2014 First day of classes for the fall 2019 semester. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>August 23\u2014 The CLAS All Faculty Meeting will take place on Friday, August 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the SAC Salons A &amp; B.
