Vino, the library&#8217;s biggest fundraising event.\u00a0 On\u00a0November\u00a09, the public library held EpicFest, a free, daylong festival celebrating children&#8217;s literature and literacy.\u00a0 I am pleased to report that members of our English Department contributed in significant ways to both of these events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter Larkin, one of our part-time faculty members, is also a member of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation.\u00a0 In his role with the Foundation, Peter is one of the community leaders who helps make Verse &amp; Vino a reality.\u00a0 Angie Williams also helps make Verse &amp; Vino happen by volunteering each year with the preparation for the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2019\/11\/Gina-and-Epic-Fest-pig-2019.jpeg-791x1024.jpg?resize=122%2C157&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2033\" width=\"122\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2019\/11\/Gina-and-Epic-Fest-pig-2019.jpeg.jpg?resize=791%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 791w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2019\/11\/Gina-and-Epic-Fest-pig-2019.jpeg.jpg?resize=232%2C300&amp;ssl=1 232w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2019\/11\/Gina-and-Epic-Fest-pig-2019.jpeg.jpg?resize=768%2C994&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2019\/11\/Gina-and-Epic-Fest-pig-2019.jpeg.jpg?w=1275&amp;ssl=1 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 122px) 100vw, 122px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>EpicFest relies heavily on volunteers to staff activity tables and help make this festival run smoothly.\u00a0 Chauna Wall, the Volunteer Coordinator for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, informed me that our students played a crucial role in helping out with EpicFest.\u00a0 Members of our English Learning Community, the Children&#8217;s Literature Graduate Organization, and the English Graduate Association as well as students in several of our classes stepped up and volunteered their time.\u00a0 Our new advisor, Gina Kelley, volunteered by serving as a bodyguard for a pig character named Mercy Watson.\u00a0 Peter Larkin&#8217;s daughter Mia also volunteered.\u00a0 Approximately half of the total number of community volunteers who helped with EpicFest this year were associated with our English Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of our English Department also play important roles roles in supporting the Atkins Library.\u00a0 Our department is very well represented on the Atkins Library Advisory Board. Paula Connolly serves as a faculty member and supporter. Peter Larkin serves as vice-chair, and Twig Branch (a friend of the English Department) serves as the chair.
