
{"id":2793,"date":"2021-03-15T09:11:36","date_gmt":"2021-03-15T13:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=2793"},"modified":"2021-03-15T12:24:52","modified_gmt":"2021-03-15T16:24:52","slug":"delilah-the-story-of-charlottes-own-television-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2021\/03\/15\/delilah-the-story-of-charlottes-own-television-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Delilah:  The Story of Charlotte\u2019s OWN Television Series"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2021\/03\/Delilah.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2021\/03\/Delilah-1024x660.jpg?resize=261%2C167&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2794\" width=\"261\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2021\/03\/Delilah.jpg?resize=1024%2C660&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2021\/03\/Delilah.jpg?resize=300%2C193&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2021\/03\/Delilah.jpg?resize=768%2C495&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2021\/03\/Delilah.jpg?resize=1536%2C990&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2021\/03\/Delilah.jpg?w=1754&amp;ssl=1 1754w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 261px) 100vw, 261px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In my Storied Charlotte blog, I celebrate stories that have Charlotte connections.&nbsp; I generally write about stories that are published in books, but this week\u2019s blog post is about <em>Delilah, <\/em>the new television series that premiered last week on Oprah Winfrey\u2019s OWN network.&nbsp; Filmed in Charlotte during the fall of 2020, <em>Delilah <\/em>makes extensive use of Charlotte locations<em>.&nbsp; Delilah <\/em>is not the first television series to be filmed in Charlotte.&nbsp; Several seasons of both <em>Homeland <\/em>and <em>Banshee<\/em> were filmed in the Charlotte area, but in these previous series Charlotte was used as a stand-in for other locations.&nbsp; In <em>Homeland, <\/em>for example, Charlotte stood in for Washington, D.C.&nbsp; <em>Delilah<\/em>, however, is a scripted television series that actually takes place in present-day Charlotte.&nbsp; For more information about <em>Delilah<\/em>, please click on the following link:&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oprah.com\/app\/delilah.html\">https:\/\/www.oprah.com\/app\/delilah.html<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several major law firms are based in Charlotte, and <em>Delilah <\/em>deals extensively with this aspect of Charlotte.&nbsp; Delilah Connolly, played by Maahra Hill, is the central character in the series.&nbsp; She is an African American lawyer who stepped away from her successful career as a corporate lawyer in order to start her own solo practice and to spend more time with her children.&nbsp; She is best friends with Tamara Grayson, played by Jill Marie Jones, who is an attorney with a powerful Charlotte law firm.&nbsp; The friendship between Delilah and Tamara is tested when they find themselves on opposing sides of a thorny and controversial case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viewers who live in Charlotte will recognize many of the locations used in the series.&nbsp; The opening shot features Charlotte\u2019s skyline.&nbsp; The Fourth Ward, one of Charlotte\u2019s urban neighborhoods, figures prominently in the series since Delilah lives in a townhouse in this neighborhood.&nbsp; A pivotal scene was shot at the Northwest School of the Arts.&nbsp; Other scenes were shot in west Charlotte as well as in the Ballantyne neighborhood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several people from Charlotte participated in the production of the series.\u00a0\u00a0 Charlotte City Council member Braxton Winston worked as a member of the production crew.\u00a0 Kelly Jacobs, a Charlotte native and talented violinist, plays the role of Delilah\u2019s teenage daughter.\u00a0 Martin Damien Wilkins, also a Charlotte native and graduate of Charlotte Latin School, assisted director and executive producer Charles Randolph-Wright throughout the production.\u00a0Recent\u00a0UNC Charlotte theatre alumna Kyra Hubert (&#8217;20) serves as a production assistant for the show.
