
{"id":30,"date":"2013-11-20T14:47:46","date_gmt":"2013-11-20T14:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=30"},"modified":"2014-08-26T16:55:41","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T16:55:41","slug":"monday-missive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2013\/11\/20\/monday-missive\/","title":{"rendered":"November 20, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Engagement Seminar<\/b> \u2014 On Thursday of this week Henry Doss will be leading the fourth and final Engagement Seminar. \u00a0The seminar will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 in the our Faculty Lounge. \u00a0Organized by Tiffany Morin (the Coordinator of our English Learning Community), these Engagement Seminars provide our English majors with a better understanding of how their studies can prepare them for lives after they graduate. \u00a0In this fourth seminar, Henry will help the participants &#8220;explore results oriented practices for networking, career enquiry, and how to create broad sets of opportunity. This seminar will be a pragmatic discussion aimed at specific real world approaches for English majors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On behalf of the entire English Department, I thank Henry and Tiffany for organizing and leading these Engagement Seminars for our students. \u00a0Henry, as many of you know, graduated with an English major from UNC Charlotte, many years ago, but his involvement in our department has not diminished over the years. \u00a0In fact, he has become increasingly engaged in the work and mission of our department. \u00a0We are fortunate that Henry is willing to share with our students his time and wisdom.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sigma Tau Delta<\/b> \u2014 Sigma Tau Delta is having a meeting in the English Seminar Room today (Monday) at 3:30.\u00a0 The meeting is for STD members and also any students interested in knowing more about Sigma Tau Delta.\u00a0 The students have created flyers about the meeting, and put the flyers in faculty mailboxes so that professors can announce the meeting to their students.<\/p>\n<p>The officers will provide food at the meeting\u00a0and are thinking of ordering pizza.\u00a0 The meeting is to\u00a0update members on\u00a0current and future\u00a0Sigma Tau Delta\u00a0projects, to\u00a0reach out to students interested in becoming involved with the chapter,\u00a0and also to ask members for ideas on what our chapter should be doing.<\/p>\n<p><b>Kudos<\/b>\u2014 As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to \u00a0share news about recent accomplishments by members of our department. \u00a0Here is the latest news:<\/p>\n<p><b>Balaka Basu<\/b>\u00a0published a review of <i>Textual Transformations in Children&#8217;s Literature: \u00a0Adaptations, Translations, Reconsiderations <\/i>in the most recent issue of the <i>Children&#8217;s Literature Association Quarterly<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lil Brannon<\/b> recently\u00a0presented a paper with Jan Rieman titled &#8220;First-Year Writing Assessment: \u00a0Continuous, Digital and Reflective&#8221; at the SAMLA Conference. \u00a0It was part of a featured session sponsored by the Carolinas Council of Writing Program Administrators.<\/p>\n<p><b>Juan Meneses<\/b>\u00a0is the subject of a short profile published in\u00a0Office of International Programs&#8217; online newsletter.
