North Carolina Humanities is the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). As part of its celebration, North Carolina Humanities launched North Carolina Reads, a statewide program in which participants read and discussed five books dealing with issues and concerns that face the residents of the state.\u00a0 North Carolina Reads was so successful that North Carolina Humanities decided to bring back North Carolina Reads in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The person who is coordinating this year\u2019s North Carolina Reads program is Melissa Giblin.\u00a0 She is the Director of the North Carolina Center for the Book, which is the North Carolina Humanities\u2019 collection of literature and reading programs.\u00a0 I reached out to Melissa and asked her for more information about North Carolina Reads.\u00a0 Here is what she sent to me:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2023\/01\/Melissa-Giblin.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2023\/01\/Melissa-Giblin.jpg?resize=82%2C124&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3588\" width=\"82\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2023\/01\/Melissa-Giblin.jpg?w=505&amp;ssl=1 505w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2023\/01\/Melissa-Giblin.jpg?resize=198%2C300&amp;ssl=1 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 82px) 100vw, 82px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>Building on the successes of the 2022 series, North Carolina Humanities has brought back its popular statewide book club, North Carolina Reads. In 2023 North Carolina Reads features five new books that explore issues of racial, social, and gender equality and the history and culture of North Carolina. The five selected books feature stories of American perseverance and diversity. The people, places, and events in the books also pose critical questions about how North Carolinians view their role in helping to form a more just and inclusive society.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>At the heart of North Carolina Reads is NC Humanities\u2019 desire to connect communities through shared reading experiences. Reading is important because it helps develop critical-thinking skills; strengthens minds, vocabulary, and mental health; and creates opportunities to empathize with others\u2019 stories and experiences. North Carolina Reads uses books as a way to create space for talking about important, timely issues.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Starting in February 2023, NC Humanities will host virtual monthly book club events where participants will hear from guest speakers, including book authors and topic experts.
