
{"id":4015,"date":"2023-12-11T10:42:15","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T15:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=4015"},"modified":"2024-01-16T10:13:14","modified_gmt":"2024-01-16T15:13:14","slug":"new-nonfiction-by-charlotte-writer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2023\/12\/11\/new-nonfiction-by-charlotte-writer\/","title":{"rendered":"New Nonfiction by Charlotte Writers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Charlotte is home to many talented nonfiction writers, including Gavin Edwards, Scott Fowler, and Lara Vetter.&nbsp; All three of these writers have new books out in time for the holidays, and all three books are intended for general readers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/m.media-amazon.com\/images\/I\/61z1ygoAsgL._SL1200_.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.6358333333333334;width:66px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Edwards, together with Joanna Robinson and Dave Gonzales, just released <a href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/9781631497513\"><em>MCU:&nbsp; The Reign of Marvel Studios<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>The book tells the story behind the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is often referred to as the MCU.&nbsp; The authors trace the history of Marvel Studios from the release of <em>Iron Man <\/em>in 2008 to the company\u2019s evolution into one of Hollywood\u2019s dominant players. The book in based on more than a hundred interviews with actors, writers, producers and others involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edwards is a regular writer for <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>and the author of more than a dozen books, such as <em>Kindness and Wonder:&nbsp; Why Mister Rogers Matters Now More Than Ever; The World According to Tom Hanks:&nbsp; The Life, the Obsessions, the Good Deeds of America\u2019s Most Decent <\/em>Guy; and <em>The Tao of Bill Murray:&nbsp; Real-Life Stories of Joy, Enlightenment, and Party-Crashing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pediment.com\/cdn\/shop\/products\/Sports_Legends-Lander_Mockup_ef6123a9-f942-448b-aa5a-472a3c524715_1024x1024.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Sports Legends of the Carolinas: Exclusive Photographs and In-Depth Conversations with the Sports Icons of our Times\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.535232383808096;width:135px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Scott Fowler and photographer Jeff Siner published a hardcover coffee-table book titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pediment.com\/products\/sports-legends-of-the-carolinas-hardcover-book?variant=44841331982628\"><em>Sports Legends of the Carolinas<\/em><\/a><em>.&nbsp; <\/em>Many of the people profiled in the book are tied to Charlotte, including Muggsy Bogues, Jake Delhomme, Bob McKillop, and Judy Rose.&nbsp; Fowler wrote the text, and Siner, a photographer for <em>The Charlotte Observer, <\/em>provided photographs for all of the people profiled in the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott Fowler is a sports columnist for <em>The Charlotte Observer<\/em>, where he has worked as a writer since 1994.&nbsp; He recently started a podcast featuring interviews with sports icons from North and South Carolina, and he drew on these interviews in writing <em>Sports Legends of the Carolinas.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/reaktionbooks.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/9781789147599-2-wpv_0x448.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.6495535714285714;width:69px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Lara Vetter\u2019s new release is a biography, <a href=\"https:\/\/reaktionbooks.co.uk\/work\/h-d-hilda-doolittle\"><em>H.D. (Hilda Doolittle)<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>which is part of Reaktion Books\u2019 Critical Lives series. It provides a lively account of modernist poet H.D.\u2019s life and remarkable literary career including discussions of H.D.\u2019s interactions with such notable figures as Sigmund Freud, Marianne Moore, and Ezra Pound.&nbsp; Since H.D. spent most of her adult life in London and Switzerland, this biography also sheds life on the American expatriates who moved to Europe during the first half of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vetter, a professor of English at UNC Charlotte, is an internationally recognized expert on H.D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The diverse nature of these three books shows reflects the wide range of authors who call Storied Charlotte home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charlotte is home to many talented nonfiction writers, including Gavin Edwards, Scott Fowler, and Lara Vetter.&nbsp; All three of these writers have new books out in time for the holidays, and all three books are intended for general readers.
