
{"id":405,"date":"2015-04-14T10:33:36","date_gmt":"2015-04-14T14:33:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=405"},"modified":"2015-04-14T10:34:49","modified_gmt":"2015-04-14T14:34:49","slug":"monday-missive-april-13-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2015\/04\/14\/monday-missive-april-13-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; April 13, 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Shapiro and Shapiro<\/b> \u2014 As part of the English Department&#8217;s involvement in the area of film studies, we are offering a topics course this coming fall semester on Alfred Hitchcock&#8217;s films, including <i>The Birds, Psycho, <\/i>and <i>Thirty-Nine Steps.<\/i>\u00a0 The person who is teaching this course is Sam Shapiro, who is a manager at the main branch of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. \u00a0He is also the long-time film programmer at the public library. \u00a0Sam has taught as an adjunct faculty member in the American Studies Program for many years, but this fall he will be teaching for English.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_409\" style=\"width: 132px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/04\/Sam-Shapiro.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-409\" class=\" wp-image-409\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/04\/Sam-Shapiro.jpg?resize=122%2C183\" alt=\"Sam Shapiro\" width=\"122\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/04\/Sam-Shapiro.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/04\/Sam-Shapiro.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 122px) 100vw, 122px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sam Shapiro<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">I find it fitting that Sam will be teaching in the English Department, for he is the son of Morton (Marty) Shapiro. \u00a0When Charlotte College became the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1965, Marty Shapiro was listed as one of the original members of the English Department. \u00a0Marty taught in the department until his retirement in 1993. \u00a0 Today Marty lives in the Memory Care Unit at The Summit at SouthPark . \u00a0Although Marty is no longer able to remember much about his years as an English Professor, the fact that his son now has connections to the department helps perpetuate the Shapiro legacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.digitalnc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/yearbooks\/id\/2094\/rec\/23\">Link to Charlotte College 1965 Yearbook (pg 40 for English Department faculty) http:\/\/library.digitalnc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/yearbooks\/id\/2094\/rec\/23<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Public Intellectuals Conference Follow-Up<\/b> \u2014 The Sixth Annual Conference on Public Intellectuals took place this past weekend at UNC Charlotte Center City, and several members of the English Department participated. \u00a0Paula Connolly gave a presentation titled &#8220;Young Public Intellectuals: \u00a0Abolitionist Literature for Children,&#8221; \u00a0and Juan Meneses presented on &#8220;Jeanette Winterson and Napoleon&#8217;s Doctrine.&#8221; Sarah Minslow gave a presentation on &#8220;Australian Children&#8217;s Authors as Public Intellectuals,&#8221; and Alan Rauch spoke on &#8220;The Un-Greening of W.H. Hudson: \u00a0How a Major Voice for Ecological Awareness Was Lost.&#8221; \u00a0Also, both Alan and Paula Eckard participated on a panel discussion on &#8220;The Publishing and Editing of Public Intellectuals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Kudos<\/b>\u2014 As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to share news about recent accomplishments by members of our department. \u00a0Here is the latest news:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Liz Miller<\/b> recently gave a presentation titled &#8220;Continuing the Conversation: Coming Together for Social Sustainability&#8221; at\u00a0the Integrated Network for Social Sustainability Conference held at UNC Charlotte Center City.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Ralf Thiede<\/strong>\u00a0attended the 82nd SouthEastern Conference on Linguistics (SECOL) in Raleigh\u00a0this weekend, presenting two papers.\u00a0 One, with Kristin Brown (a former English major of ours now teaching at Gaston College), was titled &#8220;Colonial Shadows: Two Creole Bible Translations&#8221;
