At the time, the year 1984 seemed far off in the future to me.&nbsp;&nbsp;After all, fourteen years seems like a long time to a teenager.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, I remember worrying if Orwell\u2019s dystopian vision of the future would actually come to pass.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Now the year 1984 seems like a long time ago to me, but I\u2019m still worried about Orwell\u2019s dystopian vision.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So much of what Orwell incorporated in his novel is now part of our day-to-day lives.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The mass surveillance that we associate with Orwell\u2019s phrase \u201cBig Brother is watching you\u201d is a real concern in contemporary America.\u00a0\u00a0Like the two-way televisions in\u00a0<em>1984<\/em>, our cell phones and digital home assistants have the ability to monitor our whereabouts and, to some extent, our activities.\u00a0\u00a0Like the double-speaking propagandists who run the \u201cMinistry of Truth\u201d in\u00a0<em>1984,\u00a0<\/em>many of today\u2019s politicians twist the meanings of words to such an extent that a word like \u201ctruth\u201d is used when telling a lie.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s against this backdrop that Theatre Charlotte is currently bringing a theatrical production of\u00a0<em>1984\u00a0<\/em>to Charlotte.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2024\/10\/unnamed.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"323\" height=\"323\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2024\/10\/unnamed.png?resize=323%2C323&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4342\" style=\"width:228px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2024\/10\/unnamed.png?w=323&amp;ssl=1 323w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2024\/10\/unnamed.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2024\/10\/unnamed.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 323px) 100vw, 323px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Theatre Charlotte\u2019s production of&nbsp;<em>1984&nbsp;<\/em>runs from now to November 10 at Theatre Charlotte&#8217;s space at 501 Queens Road.&nbsp;&nbsp;The play is based on an adaption of Orwell\u2019s novel by Robert Owen, Wilton E. Hall, Jr., and Williams A. Miles, Jr.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is directed by Chris Timmons, the Artistic Director of Theatre Charlotte.&nbsp;&nbsp;The cast includes Chris Patton as Winston, Dionte Darko as O\u2019Brien, and Isabella Frommelt as Julia. A post-show discussion will take place after the performance on November 1.
