
{"id":518,"date":"2015-08-10T14:16:35","date_gmt":"2015-08-10T18:16:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=518"},"modified":"2015-08-10T14:16:35","modified_gmt":"2015-08-10T18:16:35","slug":"monday-missive-august-10-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2015\/08\/10\/monday-missive-august-10-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; August 10, 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div><b>Community Outreach<\/b> &#8212; A few weeks ago Dean Nancy Gutierrez contacted me about doing a series of three presentations at Waltonwood Providence, which is a retirement community in south Charlotte.\u00a0 Drawing on the research I did for my co-edited book titled <i>Walt Disney, from Reader to Storyteller, <\/i>I agreed to talk about Disney&#8217;s life and career.\u00a0\u00a0 Last Wednesday, I gave a talk on &#8220;Walt Disney&#8217;s Personal Reading History.&#8221; <span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">This Wednesday<\/span><\/span> I will give a presentation on Disney as a filmmaker and storyteller, and <span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">next Wednesday<\/span><\/span> I will deliver a presentation titled &#8220;Children&#8217;s Literature in Disney Theme Park Development.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>I see these presentations as contributing to the English Department&#8217;s community engagement activities.\u00a0 Our department has a longstanding tradition of working with community organizations and institutions.\u00a0 I could list many examples, but I will limit myself to three that immediately come to mind.\u00a0 Through her work with the Charlotte Writing Project, Lil Brannon has made a real difference in the careers of many CMS teachers.\u00a0 Jeffrey Leak has worked closely with the staff of the Levine Museum of the New South in developing programming and exhibits.\u00a0 Greg Wickliff has worked with the Charlotte Chapter of the Society of Technical Communication on various projects involving our students.\u00a0 As these examples demonstrate, the members of our English Department are engaged in a wide range of community outreach activities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>You Ought to Be in Pictures<\/b> &#8212; In 1934 Rudy Vallee recorded &#8220;You Ought to Be in Pictures,&#8221; and the song went on to become a smash hit.\u00a0 Rudy Vallee might not have realized it at the time, but his song relates to Janaka Lewis. \u00a0 Janaka recently sent me an email about her summer adventures, and she included news about her new career as a movie star:<\/p>\n<p><i>On August 1, I took a trip to Durham to see the premiere of the film When We Free, directed by Julia Roxanne Wallace and produced by Dr. Alexis Gumbs of Durham (who both discussed the making of the film on behalf of Black Feminist Film School on campus last fall).
