
{"id":547,"date":"2015-08-31T16:11:28","date_gmt":"2015-08-31T20:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=547"},"modified":"2015-08-31T16:11:28","modified_gmt":"2015-08-31T20:11:28","slug":"monday-missive-august-31-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2015\/08\/31\/monday-missive-august-31-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; August 31, 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div><b><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/08\/gems.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-552\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/08\/gems.jpg?resize=223%2C167\" alt=\"gems\" width=\"223\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/08\/gems.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/08\/gems.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a>Hidden Gems<\/b> &#8212; Student Niner Media recently published a tabloid called <i>Welcome Back to UNC Charlotte 2015.\u00a0 <\/i>I thumbed through it this weekend and came across an interesting article titled &#8220;Hidden Gems in the UNC Charlotte Course Catalog&#8221; by Casey Aldridge, the Opinion Editor for the student paper.\u00a0 In her article, she features several of the most &#8220;exciting&#8221; courses offered at UNC Charlotte this fall, and nearly half of them are classes being taught by members of our department.\u00a0 She especially highlights &#8220;Sexing Shakespeare,&#8221; which Kirk Melnikoff and Kent Brintnall are co-teaching.\u00a0 She also includes Tony Jackson&#8217;s &#8220;I Can&#8217;t Believe My Eyes:\u00a0 Storytelling, Movies, Science Fiction&#8221; and Valerie Bright&#8217;s &#8220;Blood, Sweets, and Beers:\u00a0 Forbidden Food in Literature and Culture.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>As this article underscores, the English Department is offering a wide range of engaging courses, and the preliminary enrollment figures indicate that a record number of students are signing up for these classes.\u00a0 The current enrollment figures for our undergraduate courses (including LBST courses) add up to a total of 2,335 seats filled.\u00a0 Last fall semester, we had 2,079 seats filled.\u00a0 This represents a 12% increase.\u00a0 In reviewing these figures, I am very pleased that the English Department is having such success in attracting so many students to our courses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>News from Our English Learning Community<\/b> &#8212; Tiffany Morin, the Director of our English Learning Community, recently sent me the following report:<\/p>\n<p><i>The members of the English Learning Community are settling in after completing their first week of college. This year we have 18 very enthusiastic students, who are ready to start planning their Fall Events.\u00a0 They are currently completing their profile collages, so you can soon learn more about the individual members from the ELC bulletin board, located by 290-B. If you would like to involve the ELC in any upcoming events, please contact Tiffany Morin.<\/i><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><b>Kudos<\/b>\u2014 As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to share news about recent accomplishments by members of our department.\u00a0 Here is the latest news:<\/p>\n<p><b>Sarah Minslow<\/b> recently published an article titled &#8220;Challenging the Impossibility of Children&#8217;s Literature:\u00a0 The Emancipatory Qualities of Edward Lear&#8217;s Nonsense&#8221; in <i><i>Bookbird:\u00a0 A Journal of International Children&#8217;s Literature.<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Coleen Muir<\/b> published an article titled &#8220;The Price of Diversity.&#8221;\u00a0 It was published through <em>The Rumpus<\/em> on August 25.
