Golden and Sandburg met in 1948, and the two soon became close friends.\u00a0 Sandburg was then living on a farm near Flat Rock, North Carolina, and Golden often traveled to Flat Rock to visit Sandburg.\u00a0 Eventually, Golden wrote a book about Sandburg.\u00a0 In her biography, Hartnett captures the nuances of Golden&#8217;s friendship with Sandburg.\u00a0 She draws on the correspondence between the two men as well as their personal recollections.\u00a0 As a result, readers of her biography come away with a sense of sitting on the porch with these two giants, listening in on their conversations.\u00a0 Such are the treats that await the readers of Hartnett&#8217;s biography.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hartnett will be talking about her biography <span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">tomorrow<\/span><\/span> evening in the Atkins Library&#8217;s Halton Reading Room.\u00a0 Her talk will be followed by a panel presentation, and our own Paula Eckard is one of the panelists.\u00a0 This event starts at <span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">6:30<\/span><\/span> and concludes at <span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">8:00<\/span><\/span> with a reception and book signing.\u00a0 For more information, please click on the following link:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/library.uncc.edu\/harrygoldentalk\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/library.uncc.edu\/harrygoldentalk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>Our Newest Honorary Member of the English Department<\/b> &#8212; By the power vested in me as the Chair of the English Department, I am proud to proclaim Alison Walsh to be our newest honorary member of the English Department.\u00a0 Alison is the Director of Student Support Services, but she has a long-time interest in the field of English Studies.\u00a0 She was an English major at Appalachian State University with a concentration in creative writing.\u00a0 She has studied film history and criticism, and she took film classes with Sam Shapiro.\u00a0 This past weekend, Alison gave her first paper at an academic conference (see below for details).\u00a0\u00a0 She gave her presentation on the films of Coen Brothers, and from all accounts her presentation was a big success. \u00a0 Since she is now an honorary member of the English Department (retroactive to cover this past weekend), her success is our success.<\/p>\n<div><b>Kudos<\/b>\u2014 As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to share news about recent accomplishments by members of our department.\u00a0 Here is the latest news:<\/p>\n<p><b>Bryn Chancellor <\/b>gave a reading from her new book, <i>When Are You Coming Home?<\/i>, last week at University of North Carolina at Greensboro, hosted by its MFA program in creative writing as part of its visiting writers\u2019 series.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>Paula Eckard<\/b>&#8216;s review of <i>Carolina Israelite:\u00a0 How Harry Golden Made Us Care about Jews, the South, and Civil Rights <\/i>was recently published in <i>The Charlotte Viewpoint.\u00a0 <\/i>Here is the link:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlotteviewpoint.org\/article\/3465\/Carolina-Israelite%5D%5D-How-Harry-Golden-Made-Us-Care\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.charlotteviewpoint.org\/article\/3465\/Carolina-Israelite%5D%5D-How-Harry-Golden-Made-Us-Care<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Beth Gargano<\/b>&#8216;s entry on &#8220;Victorian Education and Literature&#8221; recently came out in the \u00a0Blackwell Victorian Encyclopedia.
