November 9, 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><b>Celebrating the 150th Birthday of <\/b><i><b>Alice&#8217;s Adventures in Wonderland<\/b> &#8212; <\/i>The publication history of <i>Alice&#8217;s Adventures of Wonderland <\/i>is a bit on the curious side.\u00a0 Lewis Carroll and his illustrator, John Tenniel, initially intended to release the book in July 1865.\u00a0 In fact, an edition of 2000 copies came out in June, but Carroll and Tenniel disliked the way the illustrations looked in this edition so they immediately withdrew the edition.\u00a0 However, twenty-three early presentation copies of this edition survived, and they are now worth a fortune.\u00a0 In November 1865, a second edition was published.\u00a0 Even though it was technically a second edition, it was this November edition that introduced the world to Alice.\u00a0 For this reason, I think that the 150th anniversary of the publication of Carroll&#8217;s classic should be celebrated in November rather than in July.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">This Wednesday<\/span><\/span> (<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">November 11<\/span><\/span>), the Children&#8217;s Literature Graduate Orga<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/11\/Jan-Susina-The-Place-of-Lewis-Carroll-in-Childrens-Literature.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-631\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/11\/Jan-Susina-The-Place-of-Lewis-Carroll-in-Childrens-Literature-185x300.jpg?resize=132%2C214&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Jan Susina The Place of Lewis Carroll in Childrens Literature\" width=\"132\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/11\/Jan-Susina-The-Place-of-Lewis-Carroll-in-Childrens-Literature.jpg?resize=185%2C300&amp;ssl=1 185w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2015\/11\/Jan-Susina-The-Place-of-Lewis-Carroll-in-Childrens-Literature.jpg?w=262&amp;ssl=1 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 132px) 100vw, 132px\" \/><\/a>nization (CLGO) is presenting a public event that they are calling Alice&#8217;s (un)Birthday Party.\u00a0 This event will take place in the Student Union Room 340B from <span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">4:00 to 5:30<\/span><\/span>. \u00a0 Professor Jan Susina, an internationally recognized expert on Carroll&#8217;s writings, will deliver a keynote address.\u00a0 Professor Susina is a Professor of English at Illinois State University and the author of <i>The Place of Lewis Carroll in Children&#8217;s Literature.\u00a0 <\/i>Following the keynote address, there will be a panel discussion featuring Professor Susina, Sarah Minslow, and Alan Rauch.\u00a0 Everyone who attends will have an opportunity to participate in a Victorian tea party complete with tea, sandwiches, and scones. \u00a0 I hope to see you there.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><b>Kudos<\/b>\u2014 As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to share news about recent accomplishments by members of our department.\u00a0 Here is the latest news:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Janaka Lewis <\/b>recently presented a paper called &#8220;Women Learning Freedom in Post-Reconstruction America&#8221; at the History of Education Society Annual Meeting in St. Louis.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><b>Lara Vetter<\/b>&#8216;s \u201cModernism and Historical Fiction: The Case of H.D.\u201d was recently published in an essay collection entitled <i>A History of the Modernist Novel (<\/i>Cambridge UP, 2015).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><b>Heather Blain Vorhies<\/b> recently presented &#8220;Doing Business Over There: Misunderstanding the Place of Nineteenth-Century Women&#8217;s Writing in the Place of Business&#8221; at the Feminisms and Rhetorics conference in Tempe, Arizona.<br \/>\n<b>Upcoming Events and Deadlines<\/b>\u2014\u00a0Here is a date to keep in mind:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">November 13<\/span><\/span> &#8212;
