I often hear great news about our students, but last week I was practically inundated with reports about our students&#8217; accomplishments. \u00a0 In today&#8217;s Monday Missive, I thought I would share this great news with everyone in the English Department.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2016\/11\/Operation-Refugee-Child.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-926\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2016\/11\/Operation-Refugee-Child-300x169.jpg?resize=300%2C169&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"operation-refugee-child\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2016\/11\/Operation-Refugee-Child.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2016\/11\/Operation-Refugee-Child.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2016\/11\/Operation-Refugee-Child.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2016\/11\/Operation-Refugee-Child.jpg?w=1573&amp;ssl=1 1573w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The first report that came in involved the students in Sarah Minslow&#8217;s course &#8220;War and Genocide in Children&#8217;s Literature.&#8221;\u00a0 On November 14 and 15, these students held a fundraising\/educational event on campus to support Operation Refugee Child, a non-profit that provides backpacks full of basic living necessities to refugee children.\u00a0 Co-sponsored by the Office of International Programs, this event raised over $2,000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The second report that came to my attention involved two of our honors students:\u00a0 Chelsea Moore and Nephdarlie Saint-Cyr.\u00a0 These students are among the very first students to receive the new Martin Scholarship.\u00a0 This scholarship, funded by UNC Charlotte alumni Demond and Kia Martin, will pay the program cost and airfare for Chelsea and Nephdarlie to participate in the 2017 spring break study abroad course, &#8220;Shakespeare in England.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The third report to reach me involved students in our chapter of Sigma Tau Delta.\u00a0 Several of our students submitted proposals for presentation at Sigma Tau Delta&#8217;s upcoming national convention.\u00a0 Two of their submissions for roundtable panels have been accepted. \u00a0 The panels that have been accepted are Sara Eudy and Chelsea Moore&#8217;s panel titled &#8220;The African American Woman in Pop Culture&#8221; and Thomas Simonson&#8217;s panel titled &#8220;The Candidacy of Gender.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The fourth report involved Cara DeLoach, one of our graduate students.\u00a0 Cara recently presented a paper titled &#8220;&#8216;Don&#8217;t Use That Word&#8217;: Raunch Culture and Sexual Violence in Contemporary Feminist Theater&#8221; at the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association conference in Pasadena, CA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Needless to say, I am very proud of our students&#8217; impressive accomplishments, but I am also pleased with the efforts of our faculty members to mentor our students.<b><\/p>\n<p>Kudos<\/b> &#8212; As you know, I like to use my <span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Monday<\/span><\/span> Missives to share news about recent accomplishments by members of our department.\u00a0 Here is the latest news:<b><\/p>\n<p>Paula Connolly <\/b>gave a presentation on <i>The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano <\/i>at the celebration of Atkins Library&#8217;s two millionth volume.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>Boyd Davis<\/b> recently learned that the Duke Endowment has funded her joint project titled &#8220;Increasing Physical Activity for Older Adults Aging in Place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Katie Hogan<\/b> recently presented a paper titled &#8220;Decolonizing the Rural in Alison Bechdel&#8217;s <i>Fun Home&#8221; <\/i>at the National Women&#8217;s Studies Association Conference in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p><b>Liz Miller <\/b>recently published an article titled &#8220;The Ideology of Learner Agency and the Neoliberal Self&#8221; in the <i>International Journal of Applied Linguistics<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lara Vetter<\/b> attended the Modernist Studies Association conference last weekend where she presented a paper titled &#8220;Late Modernism and the Dystopian Turn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><b>Quirky Quiz Question<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 When I went to the event that the students in Sarah Minslow&#8217;s class organized, I was very impressed with their efforts to communicate the difficulties facing refugee children.\u00a0 I came away thinking that nobody should live the life of a refugee, and that reminded me of the following line from a song:\u00a0 &#8220;You don&#8217;t have to live like a refugee.&#8221;\u00a0 Who recorded this song?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Last week&#8217;s answer: Phyllis Wheatley<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><em>Julian Mason has a long-standing interest in early African American literature.\u00a0 He edited the definitive edition of the works by one of America&#8217;s first African American poets.\u00a0 Can you name this poet?<\/em><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Students Rock &#8212;
