January 23, 2107"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Celebrating the Centennial of Carson McCullers&#8217;s Birth<\/strong> &#8212; Copper Resta<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Copper-Restaurant.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-988\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Copper-Restaurant-300x173.jpg?resize=192%2C111&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Copper-Restaurant.jpg?resize=300%2C173&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Copper-Restaurant.jpg?w=497&amp;ssl=1 497w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a>urant, known for its Indian food, is located just a few blocks from our home.\u00a0 Whenever I walk our dog along East Boulevard, we pass by it as we get our exercise.\u00a0 Our dog doesn&#8217;t seem to care that the famous novelist Carson McCullers lived in the building where Copper Restaurant is now located, but it matters to me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Carson-McCullers-The-Heart-is-a-Lonely-Hunter.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-987\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Carson-McCullers-The-Heart-is-a-Lonely-Hunter-196x300.jpg?resize=65%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"65\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Carson-McCullers-The-Heart-is-a-Lonely-Hunter.jpg?resize=196%2C300&amp;ssl=1 196w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Carson-McCullers-The-Heart-is-a-Lonely-Hunter.jpg?w=310&amp;ssl=1 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 65px) 100vw, 65px\" \/><\/a>McCullers and her husband rented an apartment in the building in 1937.\u00a0 While living there, she began writing <em>The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, <\/em>her first novel.\u00a0 She lived in Charlotte for just a year, but for those of us who are interested in Charlotte&#8217;s literary history, that&#8217;s long enough for us to claim her as a Charlotte writer and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of her birth on February 19, 1917.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this celebration, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, the Charlotte Film Society, and an organization called Charlotte Lit are presenting a film series showcasing three films based on McCullers&#8217;s novels.\u00a0 The series kicks off on <span>February 5, 2017<\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/The-Heart-is-a-Lonely-Hunter-movie.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-989\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/The-Heart-is-a-Lonely-Hunter-movie-198x300.jpg?resize=68%2C103&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"68\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/The-Heart-is-a-Lonely-Hunter-movie.jpg?resize=198%2C300&amp;ssl=1 198w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/The-Heart-is-a-Lonely-Hunter-movie.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 68px) 100vw, 68px\" \/><\/a>with a screening of the 1968 film version of <em>The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, <\/em>starring Alan Arkin, Sondra Locke, and Cicely Tyson.\u00a0 The film will be shown at <span>1:30 p.m.<\/span> at ImaginOn&#8217;s Wells Fargo Playhouse.\u00a0 After the screening there will be a panel discussion, and our own Paula Eckard is one of the panelists.\u00a0\u00a0 Paula is a charter member of the Carson McCullers Society, and she often includes McCullers&#8217;s novels in her courses on Southern literature.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the film series and the other events related to the centennial of McCullers&#8217;s birth, please click on the following link: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlottelit.org\/carsonmccullers\/\">http:\/\/www.charlottelit.org\/carsonmccullers\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kudos<\/strong> &#8212;
