
{"id":991,"date":"2017-01-30T16:45:35","date_gmt":"2017-01-30T21:45:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/?p=991"},"modified":"2017-01-30T16:45:35","modified_gmt":"2017-01-30T21:45:35","slug":"monday-missive-january-30-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/blog\/2017\/01\/30\/monday-missive-january-30-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Missive &#8211; January 30, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>International Holocaust Remembrance Day<\/strong> &#8212; This past <span>Friday<\/span> (January 27) marked the observance of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and this event sparked me to reflect on my family&#8217;s connections to the Holocaust.\u00a0 Everyone on my father&#8217;s side of the family came from the Jewish community in Warsaw, Poland.\u00a0 A small group of them immigrated to New York City in the early years of the 20th century.\u00a0 My great-grandparents were among those who fled the oppressive conditions in what was known as the Warsaw Ghetto, and they eventually became American citizens.\u00a0 Many of their relatives, however, remained in Warsaw.<\/p>\n<p>When I was a college student, my grandfather shared with me the story of what happened to his relatives who stayed in Warsaw.\u00a0 He had just watched the famous mini-series <em>Roots, <\/em>and he thought that I should know something about my roots.\u00a0 According to my grandfather, his relatives who remained in Warsaw were swept up in the tumultuous series of events known as the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.\u00a0 This celebrated act of Jewish resistance started on April 19, 1943, when the Jewish residents of the Warsaw Ghetto refused to surrender to the Nazi forces who had come to the Ghetto to round up everyone and deport them to concentration camps.\u00a0 Chaos ensued, and nearly every one from the Warsaw Ghetto was killed, including my relatives.\u00a0 However, they died resisting Fascism, and my grandfather always took pride in that fact.\u00a0 I do, too.<\/p>\n<p>I t<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/The-Bravest-Battle.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-994 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/The-Bravest-Battle-194x300.jpg?resize=67%2C104&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"67\" height=\"104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/The-Bravest-Battle.jpg?resize=194%2C300&amp;ssl=1 194w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/The-Bravest-Battle.jpg?w=388&amp;ssl=1 388w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 67px) 100vw, 67px\" \/><\/a>hink that it is important not only to remember the Holocaust, but also to become better informed about this nightmarish chapter in our history.\u00a0 For those who want to know more about the history of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, I recommend two books as good starting points.\u00a0 Dan Kuzman&#8217;s <em>The Bravest Battle:\u00a0 The Twenty-eight Days of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising <\/em>is an excellent historical account of the events related to the uprising. Leon <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Mila-18.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-995 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Mila-18.jpg?resize=98%2C98&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"98\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Mila-18.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pages.charlotte.edu\/mark-west\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/322\/2017\/01\/Mila-18.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 98px) 100vw, 98px\" \/><\/a>Uris&#8217;s <em>Mila 18 <\/em>is a moving novel about the uprising and the story of the Jewish resistance fighters.\u00a0 As both of these books make clear, it takes a great deal of courage to resist tyrants and bigots.\u00a0 In remembering the Holocaust, we should also remember and honor those brave people who stood with the resistance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kudos<\/strong> &#8212; As you know, I like to use my Monday Missives to share news about recent accomplishments by members of our department.\u00a0 Here is the latest news:<strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Katie Hogan<\/strong>&#8216;s essay, &#8220;The Academic Slow Lane,&#8221; appears in the newly published collection, <em>Staging Women&#8217;s Lives in Academia: Gendered Life Stages in Language and Literature Workplaces, <\/em>edited by Michelle Masse and Nan Bauer-Maglin (SUNY Press, 2017).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liz Miller <\/strong>is first author of a co-authored article titled &#8220;Exploring Language Teacher Identity Work as Ethical Self-Formation&#8221; that has just been published in the <em>Modern Language Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Upcoming Events and Deadlines<\/strong>\u2014 Here is information about an upcoming event.<\/p>\n<p><span>February 3<\/span> \u2014 The 17th Annual English Graduate Student Association Conference will take place on <span>February 3, 2017<\/span>, from <span>9:00 am to 3:00 pm<\/span> in the Cone Center Lucas Room.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quirky Quiz Question<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Like many Polish Jews who immigrated to America during the turn of the last century, my father&#8217;s grandparents settled in New York City.\u00a0 However, before they established homes in New York City, they first passed through a famous immigration processing center located on an island.\u00a0 What is the name of this island?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Last week&#8217;s answer: See below.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>In addition to writing The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Carson McCullers wrote three other novels.\u00a0 Can you complete the titles of her three other novels listed below?
