He is also affiliated with the Center for <a href=\"https:\/\/globalstudies.charlotte.edu\/center-holocaust-genocide-human-rights-studies\/\">Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights<\/a> and with the program in <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalismstudies.charlotte.edu\">Capitalism Studies<\/a>. In 2023, he\u00a0founded the Philosophy and Critical Theory Lab (<a href=\"https:\/\/pages.charlotte.edu\/pact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PaCT Lab<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>His research ranges topically political philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, critical theory, philosophy of religion, and the history of philosophy; he also frequently engages fields like genocide studies, film theory, television studies, psychoanalysis, and various kinds of critical theory. In 2019, Shuster was Visiting Professor at the Universit\u00e9 Paris 1 Panth\u00e9on-Sorbonne, and he&#8217;s also received support from Project Pericles, the Templeton Foundation, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, where he was a visiting fellow in 2007-2008. In addition to his scholarly writing, Shuster frequently writes for public-facing venues (most recently, for example, <em>The Jewish Forward, Aeon, The Montr\u00e9al Review,\u00a0<\/em><em>The LA Review of Books, <\/em>and\u00a0the <em>Philosophical Salon). <\/em>He&#8217;s also been involved with teaching in prisons, both officially and as a volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>He is currently completing three books: <em>Genocide and the State: An Alternative History of Modern Political Philosophy<\/em> ranges across several disciplines, most notably philosophy, Holocaust and genocide studies, ethnic thought, political and critical theory of various stripes. The book argues that conceptually embedded in the innermost core of the Western concept of the modern state is a homogenizing imperative that makes genocide a perpetual byproduct of the global state order. With <a href=\"https:\/\/philosophy.duke.edu\/people\/henry-pickford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henry Pickford<\/a>, Shuster is completing the <em>Oxford\u00a0<\/em><em>Handbook of Theodor W. Adorno,<\/em> under contract with Oxford University Press. Finally, under contract with Duke University Press in their &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/series\/practices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Practices<\/a>&#8221; series, Shuster is completing a book titled &#8220;Lifting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the near future, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/humanities-institute\/about\/profiles\/k-kiloh.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kathy Kiloh<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/philosophy.duke.edu\/people\/henry-pickford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henry Pickford<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.villanova.edu\/university\/liberal-arts-sciences\/programs\/philosophy\/faculty\/biodetail.html?mail=surti.singh@villanova.edu&amp;xsl=bio_long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Surti Singh<\/a>, he will start work on the <em>Oxford Handbook of the Frankfurt<\/em> School, under contract with Oxford University Press.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pantheonsorbonne.fr\/page-perso\/slaugier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sandra Laugier<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi39-OX_8aDAxUzD1kFHR_XD_QQFnoECDAQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fresearchers.mq.edu.au%2Fen%2Fpersons%2Frobert-sinnerbrink&amp;usg=AOvVaw2SG4kfK0MSExOXM6Y88iPp&amp;opi=89978449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Sinnerbrink<\/a>, he edits the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeterpress.co.uk\/collections\/tv-philosophy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TV-Philosophy<\/a>&#8221; We will read closely what various (kinds of) philosophers and thinkers have written about revolution in various times, places, and disciplines. We will compare and contrast their conclusions, all with an eye towards developing our own understanding of what it means to have a revolution. Some related concepts we will explore include violence, change, temporality, causation, and history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Ethics after Auschwitz<\/strong> (PHIL5000; cross-listed with Religious Studies).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">This course will center around what it means to &#8220;go on&#8221;\u2014to live and function\u2014as an ethical agent and as a human being in a world &#8220;after Auschwitz,&#8221;\u00a0 taken expansively to refer to an entire century of genocides, mass murder, extreme violence, and depredation. Throughout the course, we will focus on the ways in which various thinkers have assessed, responded to, and ultimately understood Western modernity after a century of mass murder, what they claim it revealed about humanity and society, and especially what it suggests for or proposes about our future. Some of the topics we may consider include racism, antisemitism, imperialism, and colonialism, and how these variously relate to genocidal violence, thinking especially about whether genocidal impulses continue to be found in present day institutions and forms of agency. Some of the figures we read may include Emmanuel Levinas, Hannah Arendt, Theodor W. Adorno, Jean Am\u00e9ry, Aim\u00e9 C\u00e9saire, Charlotte Delbo, and others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Critical Theory and Philosophy<\/strong> (PHIL3620).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">This course will offer philosophy majors the opportunity to conclude their major by critically reflecting on the practice of philosophy itself. Our readings will examine notions of philosophy and critique, about what it means to be a philosopher versus a critic or a critical theorist, and about what possibilities philosophy offers us as a human being in the contemporary world. The class will revolve around a longer paper writing assignment and a presentation of the same; we will also spend sessions thinking seriously about how your major and the training it offers relates to your life as a graduate of the university.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Karl Marx<\/strong> (PHIL3009; cross-listed with Capitalism Studies, German, Global Studies).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;padding-left: 40px\">This course will be an introduction to Marx\u2019s thought. By reading Marx\u2019s writings, we will aim to understand Marx as a philosopher with a comprehensive \u201ctake\u201d on the modern world. Some of the concepts we will discuss may include alienation, capital, class struggle, ideology, utopia, and revolution (to name a few). We will conclude the class by reading one or two figures that respond explicitly to Marx (some examples of figures we may choose are Rosa Luxemburg,\u00a0K\u014djin Karatani, Theodor W. Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, Max Horkheimer, Walter Benjamin,\u00a0Raya Dunayevskaya, Grace Lee Boggs, Ellen Meiksins Wood, or others).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philosophy of Humor<\/strong> (PHIL1512; LBST2211).<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\">We all like to laugh and find things amusing\u2014but why? What makes something humorous? Why is offensive humor offensive? Can humor be unethical or wrong? What role can humor play in politics? This course will examine these questions and others in order to understand the function and importance of humor to human life. Because humor touches on almost every facet of human life, this class will also serve as an introduction to philosophy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Needless Suffering: Critical Theory and the Classroom<\/strong> (Charlotte Teacher&#8217;s Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/charlotteteachers.org\/seminars\/2024-seminars\/needless-suffering-critical-theory-and-the-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seminar<\/a> for Charlotte-Mecklenburg K-12 Teachers).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Critical theory is nowadays daily in the news in the United States, especially with references to critical race theory dominating discussion. Yet, almost no one in these discussions\u2014critics as much as admirers\u2014has a concrete and informed understanding of critical theory.
