Clegg to Reflect Upon Lynchings in Hometown

A cornerstone event for the “Without Sanctuary”conference is a free public talk on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at First United Presbyterian Church by Indiana University history Professor Claude A. Clegg III.

Clegg will reflect upon the 1906 lynchings of three black men in his hometown of Salisbury that are considered in his book, Troubled Ground: A Tale of Murder, Lynching and Reckoning in the New South. Clegg is a historian who grew up in Salisbury but had never heard of the lynchings until 2002.  He combed through government and newspaper records to find details, and his research and book offer insights into southern history, violence and race ideology.

The schedule is set for “Without Sanctuary: A Conference on Lynching and the American South,” offered by UNC Charlotte’s Center for the Study of the New South in conjunction with the Levine Museum of the New South and its exhibit of photographs, postcards and narrative that explores one of the most horrific chapters of history. More information can be found below and also on the schedule webpage.

The “Without Sanctuary” exhibit documents hangings and other killings carried out by lynch mobs in what often became community events. The collection will be on display at the Levine Museum from Sept. 29 through Dec. 31.

The conference will bring together scholars and community members who will consider these historical images and events and their influence today. Various sessions are scheduled at UNC Charlotte Center City, 320 E. 9th Street; the Levine Museum of the New South, 200 E. 7th Street; and First United Presbyterian Church, 406 N. College Street.Read more…

Plans are underway for our 2012 conference.  Notifications about panel presentations will be sent out by July 1, 2012.  Below you will find other pertinent information.

Now that abstracts are in, please note that you need to confirm that you will present by August 1, 2012.  Email. Jeffrey Leak at jleak@uncc.edu.  Shortly after confirming presenters, we will finalize the program schedule.  Unless otherwise indicated, each presenter will have twenty minutes. We will post further information regarding power point presentations.

The deadline for registration is September 1, 2012.  Additional information is forthcoming.

As part of our grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council and the Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund at UNC Charlotte, we will have featured presentations by: Manfred Berg, Fitzhugh Brundage, Claude Clegg and Amy Wood.  We are excited about upcoming events and look forward to your participation in the conference.  We will update the site frequently.  Stay tuned.

Hotel Accomodations

There are several hotels located near the Center City Campus.  But we have reserved a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn (www.hicharlotte.com).  When making your reservation, identify yourself as a member of UNC Charlotte Holiday Inn Center City.  The rate is $109 per night, and this rate will expire on September 11, 2012.  There is also complimentary shuttle service from the hotel to the Center City Campus.

Transportation

The hotel does not house a shuttle service from the airport.  You can take a cab for a flat rate of $25.  The least expensive way from the airport is the Charlotte Sprinter Service at the airport for about $2.00.  Here’s the link that will explain it:  http://charmeck.org/city/charlotte/cats/bus/ridingcats/pages/sprinter.aspx
